This is why maintaining competition (or, if no other alternative, regulation) is so important in the wireless industry, which is effectively a closed market with immense barriers to entry for new competitors.

Sure, we could allow VZW and AT&T to swallow up or force out most of the rest of the industry. And prices might not go up. And service might improve. But had we maintained vigorous competition among many carriers, could we have had even lower prices and even better choices?

The film has the inescapable answer: "[We'll] never know."
