How the heck can this compete with a sidekick with no phone capabilities? No one likes carrying two devices for similar features.

I think the most disappointing thing about this phone is that it is GPRS...you think they might speed the data up by using EDGE instead.

Maybe it'll be UMTS capable also....or maybe they'll add it later...or it'll just be another mediocre under achiever.

Since its from AWS, I would have to bet on a mediocre under achiever. I guess we'll see when it launches tomorrow...

I don't think speed is really that much of an issue for just IM and email.

I work for ATTWS, this device will only be IM/email based, however, another OGO device will follow by Q1 2005 that will include phone capabiliites as well.

It also needs the ability to surf the web too. Even wap sites would be something.

I think AT&T's a little optimistic about it competing directly with the Sidekick. But there are a lot of folks who grieve the passing of the basic pager...folks like me that aren't early adopters and could care less about having voice capability on a device such as this.

I took a look at the user manual off of the FCC site and it doesn't look as though this competes much with the Sidekick or that AT&T is positioning it that way. I could see the press making the comparison since there are only a few devices tha...

The Ogo device isn't geared towards those who have voice service, people, its geared towards those who want IM and email service on the go without forking for voice service, or fork for a PDA. 🙂 Thats all. It doesn't come with anything else because its geared for those who don't want anything else. ^.^

At the price that seems like a pretty good deal, to be honest. I don't like the lack of voice services, though - is there some way you could have a phone as well and have this device tied in to that number? Would you have to get a new number for this device to work?

I'm just curious to see what goes on here. I like the idea of a mobile IM platfrom like this but it seems just a bit too limited.

Right, Oct 15th is the date for imagine and dmdr, however the training material did state retail stores would start selling this device on 9/27. There will not be any advertising until 10/15 though.

So do you chat in real time on this device? For example...when you receive a message, does it just pop up on your phone, or is it like on a cell phone where you have to contsantly check to see if you have a message waiting or not?

Some of you might not realize but this is a perfect device for deaf people who do not use cellphones but communicate mainly over IM and emails. Wyndtell and T-Mo customer service suck so bad plus the CSK breaks like every 3 months. I hope this AWS OGO will KICK T-Mo Sidekick's rear good and hard with a size 15 army boot. My only question is, does it vibrate when emails or IMs arrive?
