----" LaHood said hands-free calling "is not the big problem in America."----

In speaking with many Police Officers, the main concern with cellphones, is texting. It is becoming more and more prevalent that accidents are being caused by this epidemic. Drunk driving is now close second in causes.

Now, Voice calling "without" a Bluetooth is a problem because vision is hampered by arms and hands being held up to the ear blocking the view. So, in response to LaHood's statement, Using a Bluetooth has proved to significantly lower the incident rate considerably. Both hands are on the wheel and vision isn't blocked.

I remember a customer several years ago asking what the best phone for texting while driving was. When I said there was no such thing, and doing so was too dangerous, she got mad at me. That was a sale I did not mind losing.

TONS OF THINGS ARE DISTRACTIONS WHILE DRIVING. YES, TEXTING/TALKING IS DISTRACTING.... BUT, THERE ARE OTHER THINGS THAT ARE EVEN MORE DISTRACTFUL THAT NO ONE EVER MENTIONS.

WHAT NEXT?? ARE WE GOING TO BAN OUR KIDS FROM BEING IN THE CAR?? TAKE OFF THE BUTTONS ON OUR CD PLAYERS?? MAKE A CAR WITH NO MIRRORS SO LADIES CAN'T DO THEIR MAKE UP??

THIS IS WHAT I CONSIDER "PUTTING A BAND-AID ON" BUT NOT FIXING THE WOUND...

MAYBE PEOPLE SHOULD JUST B MORE VISUAL AND AWARE OF THE THINGS AROUND THEM!! WAIT TO TEXT IF YOUR ON THE FREE-WAY AND THERES A SEMI RIGHT BESIDE YOU!!
DON'T KEEP TEXTING IF YOUR TRYING TO PASS SOMEONE!!

Banning one form of driving distraction, while ignoring all others, which are of equal importance, seems a bit short sighted.

The root cause of many accidents is distracted driving, whatever the cause, and we have reckless driving laws in place to cover those already. A better solution would be to increase penalties for these infractions to a point where distracted driving, when caught by a law enforcement officer, is treated equally with driving while under the influence because, actually, what's...
