I read somewhere that not having the iphone led to T-Mobile losing a lot of customers than other carriers. Of course, other reasons factor into T-mobile's situation.

I'm not sure about that. T-Mobile USA actually gets a pretty sweet deal if the merger falls through:

That doesn't change the fact that Deutsche Telekom really wants to unload T-Mobile USA and there are few if any other potential buyers. But DT has to keep T-Mo USA, they'll be better off than before the announcement.

The government didn't appear out of thin air. We voted people to represent us and appoint others to specific positions such as FCC Chair, etc. So they know what's best for us because they ARE us.
The Verizon / Alltel merger was completely different. Alltel was never remotely close to being a major national player.
