This development effectively puts the kibosh on the merger. AT&T's duplicitous machinations fail. Common sense and consumer choice prevail.

That maybe, but they'll fight to the bitter end.

However the outcome, it seems tmobile will be in a worse off situation than before the merger announcement in March. If only they had the iphone....

If they had it long before vz got it, then they probably would have retained more of their customers.

Well people are still getting iphones on tmobile anyways. IPhone is selling unlocked phones too. I had people come to me with iphones on their tmobile acct. They may not get all the assistants needed by tmobile but they can get it on their acct. So the cuz is still happen regardless if tmobile sells it or not.

Iphone customers can still get assistance on T-Mobile. They just can't get T-Mo's 3G data, so they're stuck with EDGE.

I'm pretty sure some fanboys think that it could.

I read somewhere that not having the iphone led to T-Mobile losing a lot of customers than other carriers. Of course, other reasons factor into T-mobile's situation.

In almost two years of working for T-Mobile, I have yet to hear of a single person changing to a more expensive carrier just because they want an iPhone. Usually because I talk anyone that wants an iPhone into something better that they didn't know about because they only wanted an iphone for the advertiing.

I'm not sure about that. T-Mobile USA actually gets a pretty sweet deal if the merger falls through:

That doesn't change the fact that Deutsche Telekom really wants to unload T-Mobile USA and there are few if any other potential buyers. But DT has to keep T-Mo USA, they'll be better off than before the announcement.

I read somewhere (found it), that AT&T could probably avoid the breakup fee if the deal fails. Knowing AT&T, this would not surprise me. Either way, should be interesting to see where this heads...

Worse Off? If it doesnt go through, as far as I know at&t will owe T-Mobile Billions of dollars. Also, if you have checked you would know that T-Mobile is selling more phones then ever before, making higher revenue right now then they did at the same time last year, and have a contract renewal rate that is higher then most other carriers. T-Mobile is also no longer losing customers, but adding them.

I dont know where you are getting your info, but I think it's way wrong or your just bsing... I work in t-mobiles largest sales call center and have for 3 years. These last few months have been the slowest we have had since before I started. I dont work for t mobile directly but till just recently, none of tmobile sales was dealt with "in house" or by tmobile directly. We were the biggest. But now tmobile has closed our WTS department or back office, and moved it in house to save money. Sales have slowed way down. Calls are not coming in. People are being sent home early because we are so over staffed. My bonus checks are less then half what they were 2 years ago. We were told that t mobile opened recently a "small" sales group in chattanoog...

so Verizon can have their stupid coverage map, and buyup as needed, and the AT&T TMo merger NOT in consumer interest?? Um, since when does the government know what's best for consumers?? And how was the Verizon deal in the best interest?? sorry, FCC is so stupid. Government should not intervene in business mergers. There still is Verizon, Sprint, and all those other smaller carriers for choice.

The government didn't appear out of thin air. We voted people to represent us and appoint others to specific positions such as FCC Chair, etc. So they know what's best for us because they ARE us.

I do believe in theory, that is correct, than if that is the case, Bush Jr should have lost the election, because the majority voted for Gore. And if you really believe they are in OUR best interest, and not in THEIR best political interest, your caffeine hasn't kicked in yet. lol

The Alltel/Verizon merger was very different. For one, Alltel was not a national carrier like Tmobile. Verizon agree to divest a lot of spectrum that overlapped with Alltel's and divest customers too. ATT currently has a lot more spectrum holdings than many of the big 4.

The big thing here is the motivation for the merger. In this case, the only apparent reason is to eliminate competition. On this scale, with so few national competitors, and with huge barriers to entry for any potential new competitor, that's a problem. That's exactly the kind of thing the FCC and the DoJ are supposed to police.

The Verizon / Alltel merger was completely different. Alltel was never remotely close to being a major national player.
