I have a better idea
I have a better idea. If you have Android, get an app called GrooVe IP, or, if you have an iPhone, get an app called Talkatone, set them up with a Google Voice account, and make VoIP calls at Google Voice rates, which I'm sure are going to be lower than what AT&T charges. And, since calls from your Google Voice number to other U.S. numbers are free, you won't have to pay to call back home when you're overseas.

International roaming charges are based on what network you're using when you make/receive a call, not what number you called. If you making a call while roaming overseas, you will pay international roaming charges.

True. I guess I should clarify that I was talking about using these apps while connected to a wi-fi network, which is also how the AT&T app works. Although, with GrooVe IP and Talkatone, you can also use them over 3G, which would also still be cheaper than using voice minutes and might even be cheaper than AT&T's VoIP rates.

Will this work on blackberry as well?

No idea. It should work if there's a similar app on App World.

At least it is something you can download and choose to use (or not use). Better than loading this on phones by default. The way to be competitive is to offer something that has value. Some of the rates to certain countries are the best I've seen around.
