Exactly how do they choose the markets to roll EV-DO out in?

Is it solely a profit thing or are there more reasons for picking San Diego, Washington DC and Las Vegas as the initial markets for this?

Just a thought....if you notice that they are all three across the country. Perhaps this will help them in the future to connect their entire network. Like instead of trying to blanket across from one end of the country to the other, they will just kinda expand when and where they can.

EV-DO is a very powerful tool for the mobile professional or anyone who needs high speed connectivity everywhere. Being that Washington DC is somewhat the political head of the country it makes sense to offer a service like this, however there are a large number of markets that would probably be more profitable (unless the gov't wastes money on wireless service like it wastes money on toilets for the military 😁).

NYC, Boston, Chicago - all the major business centers seem like the best places to roll out high speed wireless service.

Maybe it's just me.

They are probably looking to roll out in a smaller market so as to avoid the traffic of a larger market durring the roll out phase. Kinks must be worked out during this phase as well.

those are also the areas where bugs in the system could cause someone to loose millions. Plus the new systems may not be able to handle the kinds of traffic they would experience in those areas.

Very good point. On that note, why roll it out in Washington DC? Bugs in the system could mean security leaks or worse..

From what I saw on this, its been mostly a money thing, they want to go first where professionals gather up and have major important meetings. They will probably do LA, Seattle, San Fransisco, and other east area cities next I assume.

two things;

1. If you were investing over a billion dollars this year in rolling out high speed wireless connections, where would you begin? Start with major business areas. Yes I know there are other BIG cities but they gotta start somewhere.

2. Where is one of the biggest events held every year where wireless company show off their stuff? Vegas!
