This guy has an interesting point of view on the potential for apple to move into the cell phone industry. I hope he's right.

I think this announcement actually precludes Apple from entering the phone market directly. They probably considered it, but decided to stick to what they're best at these days, (software,) and team with Motorola for the hardware.

This guy seems to assume that this will mean some sort of Apple-branded device made by Motorola. That's not what was announced. The phones will be Motorola phones - not just Motorola "innards".

What was announced was that a special mobile version of iTunes - a software-only iPod, if you will - will be included on certain Motorola phones next year. Nothing more, nothing less.

Apple also adapted Quicktime for cell phones and PDAs many months ago......
Jobs flat out said there will be no cell phone or PDA from Apple. he said Apple really had a PDA almost ready to release recently but cut it late in the game. his implication (as of 2 or 3 months ago) was that the Treo is the thing to buy if you want a smart phone.
