The start of all carriers prepaid or not going to tiered data pricing.

Ah, most people don't actually USE their smartphones anyway. Most people are just facebook freaks.

Ummm, wouldn't Facebook be using the smartphone? Last I new, that was internet access.
...

US Cellular "passes" on iPhone....really? maybe they should have done a pole amoungst their customers if they would buy one if offered by USC! I for one would have. Typical USC, crappy phones or SLOW to get new phones!! If the service wasn't the best in my area I would switch in a heartbeat!
...
Fantastic, now they can blame their woe's on Apple and AT&T when they lose customers. How original.

It doesn't matter what the customers want if it isn't profitable...and from the sounds of it, Apple was simply asking for too much money....it isn't worth going bankrupt to get the iPhone, it won't bring in new custoemrs, and even if it did, if iPhone subscribers bring in less revenue than the cost of getting the phone, it's simply a nonstarter.
...
You don't know what the terms were. They could offer a poll that might be something like this:
Apple has decided to charge US Cellular more than any other company for the iPhone. Would you be willing to sign a 2 year contract and pay 169.99/month for 1 line of service after purchasing the device at full price?

Facebook uses up minimal amounts of data. Jay describes using your smartphone as completing raping the cellular network you're on ๐ Streaming video/audio, stuff like that.
...
That is quite true, indeed, the most common complaint is 'why should I be forced to have a data plan just because I have a smartphone?'
...
That's an easy answer. Because the phone mainly functions off of data.
...
That sounds good, but then the customer responds 'but I never use data and I don't want it'.....

Make sure they understand what data is.
Then if they still say they don't need it, tell them they don't need a smartphone then.
*shrugs*
Explaining how accidentally using data on the pay-per-use rates could cost them a fortune also tends to help. The hard customers are those that will use their smartphone, but say they only need to use it in Wi-Fi. It goes back to accidental use outside of Wi-Fi, but that's a harder sell.
...
Nothing works with those people, they just want the phone because 'it's cool' but they don't want to pay for its functionality.....
