A government official overseeing a lawsuit, in which the plaintiff IS the government, is allowing more people to jump onto the governments side?

hmm....

The People == The Government == Everyone in America

Is that so hard to understand?

Every person, organization or corporation who stands to be impacted by a proposed government action (i.e. approval of competition-stifling merger) is what's legally referred to as an interested party to the lawsuit.

All interested parties have the right to express their positions in a court of law. What the judge basically did today was affirm (duh) that the wireless competitors will be impacted in some manner by the actions taken by the court. They are, therefore, interested parties who shall not be brushed out of the courtroom just because AT&T wants to sweep reality under the rug.

That's how the American justice system works. If you don't like it, you could move to Iran...
