Anyone see TechTV where they were demoing off the VZW 3G aircards?

Guess what they did... they used HIGH SPEED INTERNET EVERYWHERE... when they had a bad signal they reverted back to CDPD seamlessly!

That sounds a whole lot better than going from the HotSpot (limited locations) to GPRS (slow as hell all over).

EV-DO is pretty cool. (By the way, I believe the cards fall back to 1xRTT, not CDPD.)

But this is still a great step forward for T-Mobile. T-Mobile's HotSpot is pretty popular as Wi-Fi services go, and seamless integration with GPRS is a huge deal for those users.

For a certain users, this is actually really cool. GPRS is plenty fast for simple e-mail on the go. And this will let you enjoy a speedy survey of the morning news (including video) with your coffee at your local Starbucks. I could see doing that. 😎

So yeah, EV-DO is awesome, but Wi-Fi has its place, too, and if it's ever going to have a chance against EV-DO, this is exactly the kind of thing it needs.
