AT&T Wireless Launches 3G
Pricing
It's unlimited, but not for laptops, PDAs, or any connection via Bluetooth, infrared, or cable. What's nice is that they don't block such connections, they simply bill it at an extra $1/MB, which isn't unreasonable.
At that rate, it's perfect for the occasional checking e-mail on a trip, etc. Of course serious laptop users will want the full data plan and a card, which is $150 and $80/month.
I think $25 is a bit steep, though. On top of a typical $50 voice plan, that's a pretty steep premium just to be able to watch ...

The pricing is interesting. It's a flat $25/month on top of your voice plan. Voice plans are normal GSM plans, but only certain ones are eligible. The $25 just covers mMode data, but it's required if you use a 3G phone.

If $25 included unlimited mMode plus 25 MB of non-mMode (tethered or Bluetooth) usage, then that would be something worth talking about.
But alas, they're still thinking short-term... about how much $$$ they just spent on the new network. I guess that's why they're getting bought... 🙄
Hopefully Cingular will have more vision. 3G is one of those things you have to experience (or one of your friends does) before you see why it's worth the extra money. That automatically mean you need a loss-leader of some kind.
Unfortunately, most 3G carriers don't seem to understand that. The only exception so far seems to be Vodafone:

If the $25 included some data features like text and multimedia messaging, that wouldn't be bad either. Cingular has been pushing their MEdia packages which for $19.99 a month, you get unlimited Internet express, 1500 text messages, and 200 multimedia messages. Of course its not 3G but you get more for your money and the GSM provides pretty fast downloading. It will be very interesting to see how Cingular will price 3G in the near future. 😁
