Just a matter of time, this WILL happen with Sprint Smartphones...

I look for Sprint to change Boost Mobile's data soon with the upcoming Virgin 2.5GB 3G Cap (then throttled) going into effect on January 1st, 2012. Then at Sprint direct, to appease new Iphone customers for awhile, they will keep it at unlimited. Wait until ATT gets TMO & eliminates a competitor & they have picked up a bunch of Iphone customers & they will change it for smartphone customers too. I have watched everyone closely regarding data for years & I would bet that 2013 will not see unlimited data offered any longer by Sprint. They may offer a larger data allotment than ATT & VZW to differentiate themselves but "unlimited data" will be gone soon. Any carrier or MVNO (like Straight Talk that will say they are unlimited will be just flat ...

I should add though before somebody calls me out on this that if you have it now, you will almost certainly be able to keep it, hopefully? I guess though this isn't the case with Sprint customers this article. Sprint would be at the height of stupidity if they went to data tiers & didn't grandfather smartphone customers that had unlimited. They would lose so many customers. I wonder with data cap announced for all Virgin Mobile Customers (again, no grandfathering & this was supposed to start 10-1-11 then changed to 1-1-12) how their 2011-Q3 subscriber numbers are. I guess we'll see on 10-26 when they report.

Well this was nice post, however there are no facts on any of it. Sprint will definitely keep the unlimited data and Dan Hesse has already confirmed that. This is what is going to differentiate the competitors from Sprint. Virgin and Boost may have caps because it is pre paid service. You get what you pay for. The $10 Premium data add on is for unlimited data usage with absolutely no overages or limits for your smart phone. The reason the data caps are being changed for broadband devices is because the 3G/4G network is shared between the bulk of the phones with Data and most Broadband customers, this limit is in place to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable data experience. When people stream endless amounts of netflix, online games, and mo...

That can all apply to data caps on smartphones as well. Putting caps in place to make sure everyone gets their fair share of the network is one of the rationales behind data caps (besides the money behind overages). Why would that be different between smartphones or mobile broadband customers? Smartphones can use up exorbitant amounts of data as well.

Lol. did you not read my post? not trying to be rude but if you are a customer you would know that you are paying your $10 Premium to have unlimited data usage with no limits or overages. Dan Hesse has already made it public that smart phones will definitely keep the unlimited data. Hence the cap on broadband only services.

This is what sets Sprint apart from the competition and why Sprint will continue to be the best value in wireless for smart phones.

I understand that, but I'm saying your rationale behind them capping their mobile broadband devices could (and has been with other companies) applied to data caps on smartphones as well.

"with no data caps or limits"

Read your T&C's. If you roam off of Sprint's network (which is easy to do), and exceed 300MB or 800 mins in a billing period, Sprint reserves the right to term or disco you. Plain and simple.

As for keeping Unlimited Data? It will change. There are too many different ways for Sprint to change it's data pricing yet still offer Unlimited. Maybe instead of a $10 charge, next year it will be $20 etc.

No dude, you didn't read his post. He can see the future and has guaranteed that Sprint will NOT be getting rid of unlimited smartphone data. I guess history doesn't repeat itself (3x.) iPhone, I'm looking at you.

If I'm wrong on 1-1-2013, call me out on it then. Aside from that, you are only speculating too. What CEO's say & what they do are VERY often two completely different things.

Ok, here is something to slow your speculations. Sprint Vision Network if you dont know about it read about it at Sprint.com, Sprints 1 billion dollar deal with Lightsquared for LTE, and also the fact that Sprint has more spectrum then ATT and Verizon combined... This really does mean something. Also just in case you didnt know Sprint has the most towers out of all carriers combining Nextel and Sprint towers, when you read about the Vision network you will better understand why Sprint is going to keep unlimited data.

The other carriers are lacking the innovation that Sprint is going to be putting forth in the near future. Sprint has two services Wireless and Broadband to take care of, the other carriers have a ton of services that use th...

Sprint in single form, does not have the spectrum means to stay as competitive as ATT and VZW. However, in contrast, Their partnership with Clearwire gives them a great advantage in what needs to be accomplished.

Two things need to happen here to keep Sprint out of the danger zone.

1) Their focus on LightSquared is a mistake. In my opinion, it's a fallacy. They need to move on. Given LightSquared's regulation issues with the FCC over the GPS' cross interferences with LightSquared...

Thats true however Sprint does not have the capital to help out Clearwire also their 2.5 frequency works best with tablets and netbooks. Sucks for cell phones. :/

Correct.

No wireless network of feasible density -- not even if we convert hundreds more megahertz bandwidth of UHF TV spectrum to mobile use -- can sustain countless users streaming audio or video all day, every day, everywhere they go. The result is gridlock, a wireless "tragedy of the commons," in wh...

Indeed, I scoff to consider the ramifications of the implications of the consequences of such rampant, unfettered, wholly incorrigible media consumption. Ergo, I would remind you to recall that when you stare into the void of media streaming, the void also stares into you. This trend of increasing intellectual malfeasance may result in a cultural "Crime and Punishment," if you will.
