What happens to current Nextel users?

Since all current Nextel phones are 800mhz is Nextel going to upgrade customers' phones for free or are people going to be forced to pay for upgraded 1900mhz phones? I'm not a Nextel subscriber, but I'm just very curious about this topic.

iDEN is on its last legs as a technology, which is why it's an open secret that Nextel has been considering a switch to CDMA for a while now. So a switch to a new network was already in the cards anyway. In fact, this is probably the main reason Nextel didn't switch to CDMA sooner - they wanted to switch technology and frequency band at the same time, instead of two costly migrations within a few years. It's smart.

I'm sure there will be a transition period, where they will use both bands. It will be just like Cingular and AT&T Wireless' recent transitions from TDMA to GSM. If Nextel wants to (or is forced to) make the transition quickly, they will have to offer incentives or discounts for people to switch to new phones on the new network...
