Pushing an ota update, even if it is possible on the iPhone, and forcing it upon the owner of a phone is illegal. So if you want to stay unlocked, don't upgrade the phone.

It sounds like you're confusing an 'SIM unlock' with a jailbreak...an ota would reverse a jailbreak, but a SIM unlock is permanent and can never be reversed.

What the blog/artical/story says, that the Sprint ip4 will have the gsm side unlocked, that Sprint is going to push an upgrade that would like the gsm side, if in the future you want to unlock it and in good standing, you would have to contract Sprint.

What I said, is its illegal to modify without the owners consent. And also said, I doubt they would be able to to an ota update in any case. Nothing to do with jailbreaking.

They can do whatever they want to it before they sell it to you, and I can see why they would want the GSM SIM to be locked at sale, otherwise people would buy a Sprint iPhone, because it is cheaper to buy a phone on contract than at the no commitment price, then cancel the contract after a couple of months, pay the OTA (which will STILL be cheaper than buying an iPhone at no commitment price) then plug in a GSM SIM from an at&t or T Mobile or whatever local or regional carrier, and use that...

But, if the phone is locked at sale, and is then later unlocked, an OTA cannot reverse the unlock, once a previously locked phone has been unlocked, the unlock is permanent, it cannot later be reversed.

If people are interested in an unlocked ...

T-Bone, They said the phone will initially unlocked on initial sales, and then they will lock them on thereafter sales. But if the phone comes unlocked, thats what I'm talking about. And, I agree if you want a sim free iPhone better off getting it direct from Apple.

Understand what you are talking about...and I had to read the article and your post 3-4 times for it to sink in....I guess I'm extra dense today.... 🤣

Here's the thing, I think you're wrong on the legal claim. When you buy carrier equipment at a subsidy with a contract, the phone doesn't actually belong to YOU until after you fulfill the terms of your contract. Prior to that, it is owned by the carrier, and if they want to modify it, they have that right. Especially if the contract specifies that the phone is supposed to be locked at sale...which it almost certainly does.

Legally, it is not a defense to argue that 'okay I agreed to be bound by these conditions, but due to error, it wasn't enforced, so therefore I get to bene...

To be honest, I'm not sure if they do own it, and I understand contract obligations for phones. And you want a $700 device for $200, you expect an obligation on your part. Or just go and get one next month strait from apple and go contract free from ATT or TMO.

Also, Sprint can't do crap with an iphone without Apple's blessing, it is an unbranded device. Apple unlocks and I guess locks the device through syncing with itunes.
