Is 30-Pin even any good?

I don't mean it in a way of an opinion, but technically... does it perform as well in terms of data transfer as microUSB?

It depends on how it is connected to the PC. In 99% of installations in today's world, the 30-pin connector, when connected via USB, is a USB connector.

You'll notice that pins 1-6 are for audio in and out (accomplish the same thing with a 3.5mm jack, industry standard)

Pins 8, 9 and 10 are for video, and 9 and 10 are only for iPod Photo/Color. 8 is composite (all of the above could be replaced and enhanced with an industry standard mini-hdmi port)

Pins 11, 12, 13, and 21 are for serial ipod data transmission. This could be accomplished with software on both ends of a USB communication setup and eliminated.

Pins 14 and 17 are not currently used.
