T-Mobile just isn't strong enough to compete against the other 3.
However, that is a lot of assumption, and I argue that people are not looking at all of the possible things that can happen. Let me explain:
What is the biggest problem people, including gov, have with the merger: Well, it would make ATT too big and there would be one less major carrier (creating a duopoly..or at least not enough competition).

However it would be hard for Sprint to merge with T Mo now, after being so outspoken against the ATT/Tmo merger...but things would be interesting.
That would foster competitiveness, giving them a bigger slice and maybe some of their own towers where they're lacking.
Sprint-Junk again never going to happen.
T-mobile came to ATT to buy them. No one else wanted them. Sprint is whinning, and hoping for a good chunk without paying any extra money.

Actually, you're wrong. It was reported on this site that Sprint made a bid to buy T-Mobile about a week before At&t put a bid in. At&t swooped with a bigger bid and thus landing us where we are now.

DT is in deep trouble in Germany due to the whole economy situation in EU.
Some countries are in danger of bankruptcy and rich countries have to support them. Unfortunately, Germany is one of them.
Frankly, I'd see the whole DT system disintegrate itself.
