How does QWERTY compare?

How does your speed compare on a QWERTY keyboard device? It would be interesting to see if T9 is faster for you just because there are less keys to remember or if it's the ABC layout of Fastap that is confusing. Personally I'm as fast or faster with T9 than a QWERTY device on most phrases. Names, URLs and email addresses slow me down on any predictive system though.

this is the exact question I had. Fast tap to me isn't really that great. I never really thought it would be that much faster than T9. The real question is whether or not people are faster on qwerty v. T9. fast tap requires learning a whole new system, which may take months for some...however, most people can type okay on a qwerty keyboard.

i still have a sidekick II lying around here somewhere. i'll try to find its charger and see if i can't arrange another test. it's going to be much tougher to find someone who doesn't type though, as opposed to someone who had never used t9 before.

the test will be different. I would actually prefer if you got someone who was proficient on a keyboard. hell, just time yourself on a sidekick vs. T9 on a regular cell phone. I'm just kinda curious, I might do the test myself when the LG 9900 drops for VZN

I'm pretty sure that QWERTY will take way less time, i think all of us use a computer and QWERTY is computer user friendly. I have a TREO 700p and wouldn't change to a fastap phone because is not fast enough for me.

I dont think there is any question of qwerty v. fastap. Thats a no brainer. but qwerty v. T9, now you might have a formidable challenge!

I have used the qwerty on a 6700 and carried the LG vx8300 T9 is where its at I think its the fastest method for typing especially after you have used t9 and taught it a few commons words!!!! I will gladly accept that challenge!

No need to find a newbie at QWERTY, I just wanted to see what method you were fastest with. Obviously that's not Fastap. A lot of people seem to think mobile QWERTY is a god send, that it makes things super fast. But I think T9 is actually faster once you learn it (I can touch type with T9 at a pretty good clip). There are less keys and the pattern isn't any more obtuse than QWERTY. But there is a learning curve, which is a tough hurdle for some people to overcome.

Being good at typing on a fullsize QWERTY only helps marginally on a mobile QWERTY. Sure you know where the letters are at, but you only use your thumbs to hit the keys. It's completely different in practice.

Fascinating stuff, and hopefully an extension to all the research I did on this recently, comparing many other forms of text input:

Comments welcome!

BTW, I just tried your 'long' text phrase on the qwerty-keyboarded Nokia E70 and it took 16 seconds.

Interesting link, quite a long list of devices. I did the long text phrase from the video on a W800i just now, 10 seconds (probably would have been a little less but I had to start and stop the timer myself). Sadly, I probably type faster on T9 than a lot of people type on a fullsize QWERTY that they use at work all day.

I think the test is invalid anyway. Comparing fasttap and t9 is unfair, because in t9 you're not typing each and every letter as in fastap. That wasn't hard to figure out!

Fastap is designed to be a faster text entry method, so it's completely fair. Sometimes more keys can be faster, otherwise our computers wouldn't have a full keyboard (just the number pad!). There's a tradeoff though, I think I'm faster with T9 on a mobile device because of the limited space (since you can only use two fingers, less keys are a good thing). But on a fullsize keyboard I am much faster than any mobile text entry method.

I just don't see how that could be fair if to spell the word "learn" with t9 all I have to do is press the first 2 or 3 letters and the word pops up as oppose to all 5. I also thought that fastap may have been another option or alternative. Giving the customer another choice, but like anything else it's new and it's going to take some getting use to.

But that's not how T9 works, it's predictive in the sense it can figure out the word you probably mean, but it doesn't do completion (Motorola's competitor iTap does completion, but it's still not much faster because you have to be looking at the screen and most people can't touch type on 9 keys for whatever reason).

To type 'learn' in T9 you would just hit 53276, in multi-tap you would need to hit 55533277766 .

I actually have about the same type speed for t9 and Qwerty, but I think Qwerty is faster because of punctuation. Periods and commas usually take longer on t9, so on a long text I prefer Qwerty. And this has come after years of using both t9 and Qwerty...
