Sprint, like usual, doesnt need "help" launching LTE on their own... they have the network and equipment in place, the deal benefited LightSquared more than Sprint in every way, Sprint just got a really nice financing cushion from LS (assuming they ever come up with the promised cash) to appease the stockholders. Sprint maintains $4 billion in cash, the LightSquared deal is worth $6 Billion over 10 years (its late, im not fact checking but i believe thats the time frame) so when you do the math, they could potentially put it all on the table and have their network up and running with no partners, but Wall Street frowns on companies with no cash holdings, as do the stock holders, and lets not bet the remaining debt payments on future earnings alone while we're at it. Bottom line, its possible to go it alone, but not many companies/boards/CEO's have the balls (some might argue stupidity) it takes to do it.
