It didn't work, its hand writing recognition was an epic fail, and the product was the laughing stock of the tech industry for years....

The thing was a dud....like Apple TV only even more spectacular.

Linus Industries released the Write-top six years prior to the Newton. While the handwriting recognition may have not been as advanced as the Newton, it did set an example for the Newton. In fact, in 1987, the Write-Top was even considered a type of tablet. Something else Apple "supposedly" seems to take credit for.

Isn't it interesting how history was actually written back then but not considered cutting edge.

It probably wasn't considered cutting edge because it didn't catch on with the masses.

True Jay, the Linus Write-Top was not a commercial success. But, the funny thing about technology, is that if it appears too outlandish, people have a hard time accepting it. Things that cause society to venture too far from the comforts of mainstream use, sometimes don't hit the mark.

The point here, is that while the Newton had more recognition than the Write-Top, it was NOT the innovation that some would believe.

Neither did the Newton, the Newton was a failure, the only reason people even remember it is because 'sainted' Apple made it.

There's a reason why cancelling the Newton was one of the first things Steve Jobs did when he became CEO for the second time.
