Just a few simple questions, could someone please answer. I understand that DV is data-voice, and DO is data only. What is the major benefits of DV over DO? 😁 thanks

Well, the Data-Only is a big part of it. With EV-DO, Verizon has to set aside a full 1.25 Mhz of their spectrum for it. And if they max out that, (and they have more spectrum available,) they set aside another 1.25 MHz chunk for it (which is then unavailable for voice).

1.25 MHz may not sound like a lot, it's a pretty large chunk to dedicate to just voice or data. That really limits the ways Verizon can portion out its spectrum.

EV-DV includes both voice and data. It essentially combines 1xRTT with all of the advanced data concepts of EV-DO. It's fully backward-compatible with 1xRTT, too. So a 1xRTT tower can be upgraded to 100% EV-DV, and 1xRTT users can go on their merry way, while EV-DV users can use those services only as much as t...

Thanks Rich, I believe Sprint has made a wise choice holding out for the EV-DV, that is if it all goes smooth. It would only seems smart for Verizon to do the same, but there must be some reason they didn't. 🙂

Well, because it gives them a short-term monopoly on wireless broadband. Both EV-DO and EV-DV offer near-DSL speeds. But EV-DO technology is here now, while EV-DV infrastructure and phones are still a ways off. By launching EV-DO now, Verizon can be the only game in town, at least for a couple of years.

That's why this new announcement is interesting. It means TI, ST, and Nokia are actually ahead of Qualcomm in bringing EV-DV chips to market. That gives Sprint an option to possib...

All you have to do is look at all the pub Verizon is getting from the broadband connection. Tech magazines are drooling over it and when it rolls out past DC and San Diego the rush they are going to get from business is going to be sick. Why pay 40.00 for your DSL connection when you can pay 79.99 for unlimited completely wireless connection?
