They're competing with Android. And Android is open-source, with support from developers and manufactuerers. So a vehicle or appliance manufacturer is going to look at WebOS and Droid and probably lean more towards Android since.

WebOS is based on Linux, and is an odd hybrid of open source Linux code and some closed source proprietary Palm code....

So a substantial chunk of WebOS is already open source, and I think the open source component would be enough to power any number of consumer electronic devices, and that's assuming that HP doesn't decide to just make the whole thing open source, which they might, since it's not like they're gonna make much money off of it.
