I don't understand why sprint runs so many netowks.. instead of just improving what they have. They should of shot down iDen a long tIME AGO

They took a shot and it didn't work out. They hoped the jump they had with WiMax would give them an edge. Unfortunately, Clear didn't have the money to build out fast enough and Verizon was able to build out so quickly that they lost the advantage before they could gain enough customers.

I'm sure the hope was that WiMax would have such a large base that they could convince some of the regional carriers to adopt it as well. It didn't work that way and they're left with no one they can roam with.

However, they can't just switch overnight. They've been selling Wimax phones and dongles and have to support them for a reasonable amount of time. Fortunately, it's mostly early adopters who will be more than willing to switch fairly quic...

Actually the major thought for Sprint when deciding to go to the Wimax format was a lot more simple then that. Basically they were given a time frame in which they had to use the spectrum they are currently using for the Wimax network. IF they didn't use that spectrum in time then they would have been forced to forfeit(sp) it. To put it a simple as possible... Wimax technology was ready to deploy within the time frame where as LTE still hadn't gone through enough testing to be ready to launch in time to keep the rights to the spectrum.

THANK YOU! So many people don't realize this and just revert to the "sprint is stupid" argument. Wimax was necessary at the time. They can flip the switch to LTE.

They are currently developing a technology that utilizes all the different spectrum signals at once. So basically if one signal isn't strong enough then the phone switches to another. This would basically give Sprint a commanding coverage assuming they can make it work as planned. I'm anxious to see how that works out. There are some areas now that have iDen coverage but don't have CDMA or rather has roaming coverage with Verizon. With this technology they could take full advantage of their cell sites and the expansion would be amazing.

Can you please cite your source about the technology that utilizes all spectrums? 🤨

First off, when you make a statement as strong as the post that I was responding to, citation should be included in the post, not for ppl to automatically believe you or to go fishing the web for info fighting for you to be proven correct. So no I'm ok. And this is not to say that I don't thing he/she is correct in what he/she were stating, all I'm saying is that it is proper etiquette to include a link to validate your claim.

Well I didn't realize there was "proper etiquette" for a phone scoop comment. I also thought that everyone on here was technologically savvy enough to utilize google. Although since you seem to lack that ability try going to www.google.com and click "I feel lucky" a regular search may be beyond your abilities.

That would be interesting to see but, wouldn't that be problematic, when it comes to OEM's developing phones that switch between so many types of signal spectrums? I don't see how that would benefit Sprint in the long run, if they can't get OEM's to manufacture multiple phones that people would want and not be bulky and ugly. I just don't see too many OEM's on board with that idea. Not just for one carrier.

Really not sure on the technological side of things, I just know what they are trying to do. Guess this is a "we shall see" scenario.

And it's LTE. But they have a contract with Clearwire, so to speed there roll out of LTE and not to run two competing 4G networks the only thing that would make sense is to buy out Clearwire.
And then Sprint will probably convert Clear's assets to LTE.
I just wonder if Sprint can make this transition before the ATT/TMO merger? 🤨

Unless Sprint/Clearwire is willing to replace all WiMAX customer equipment already in the field, it will operate WiMAX and LTE simultaneously for a period of time. But Sprint/Clearwire has more than sufficient BRS 2500/2600 MHz spectrum in which to do so.

For several reasons, it does not matter.

Additionally, the AT&T-T-Mobile merger will not likely garner regulatory approval. AT&T greatly damaged its case for the merger last week when one of its law firms accidentally released a non redacted letter that reveals some info that AT&T does not want the public to know.
