Google and Motorola are both in deep crap. Oracle has all but won its lawsuit against Google, and Motorola is about to get a death blow from Apple ( http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/apples-sam sung-complaint-reveals-its-also-suing-motorol a-over/ ) .

Uhm... That was one of the reasons he stated for the purchase... for their patent holdings.
Heck, if I had been forced to bet on which company I thought they would buy, from the mobile phone producers, it would have been Sony Ericsson or HTC, not Motorola.
As for future implications; I think this will work out well. Motorola has a strong IP portfolio that will help protect Android from current and future law suits. As well, it sounds like they will keep the two separate, so it won't give Motorola a huge advantage over the other manufacturers with regards to Android...

But to be honest, my main concern in all of this, is the extreme possibility that innovation can or will be temporarily stifled by moves like this. This greatly affects the consumers that look for the next big thing. I fully understand the strategy by Google to execute the purchase of Motorola to strengthen their defense in an industry plagued with litigation. However, the focus has now begun the process of patent disputes rather than innovation. All these patents will need to be hashed out before moving forward with further advancements or the epic wave of patent wars will continue to take center stage.
