Shocked? My jaw hit the ground with enough force to crack marble!! NEVER DREAMED of this one! This is why GOOG has been cool as a fan throughout the insane number of patent lawsuits losses they are facing. Checkmate! My first reaction was screw any other carrier (Ive hated Samsung while carrying them for years now) I'm from this moment forward die hard Moto! Then after a moment of reflection, I started to wonder how this was all going to play out with Jha's recent verbal commitment to WP7 and exploring WebOS licensing... Then if this guarantees the next Nexus to be a Motorola (I imagine the answer is DUH), THEN whether GOOG is really up to maintaining the amazing turnaround story that has been Motorola[Mobility], or if they could care le...

I was wondering how something big like this could happen without any leaks. Kinda like the AT&T T-Mobile Merger.

I could see this altering the lineup of devices Motorola will launch that get direct updates and support from Google. Much like the Nexus One got its SW updates. Google has kept a lid tight on this without leaks, who knows where they will take this!

Although it may have been on the back room discussions at Google, As recently as a couple days ago Motorola was looking to 'differentiate' itself from other Android licensees and was actually going to wage war against the Android ecosystem:

Google and Motorola are both in deep crap. Oracle has all but won its lawsuit against Google, and Motorola is about to get a death blow from Apple ( http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/10/apples-sam sung-complaint-reveals-its-also-suing-motorol a-over/ ) .

Uhm... That was one of the reasons he stated for the purchase... for their patent holdings.

I did not even have a hint about it. It makes sense that they would buy Moto. Everyone is after google because of its fast growth and exceptional services. This will help them make a lot more improvements to Android and bring them into the production of the cell phones as well.

Interestingly enough, they've always rejected as a whole the idea of being a phone manufacturer and everything it drags along with it, which is why Im wondering on one hand how Moto will fair from this deal, and then on the other hand they did state that it will operate as its own unit, licensing Android the same as everyone else, so maybe they will be okay.

I could see them keeping the name the same, this is just an acquisition for Google, as stated primarily for the patents (think of this as an air raid shelter). their locked in a death struggle with crApple who is naturally litigious, suing the pants off of everyone in sight in order to stifle competition. time will tell of course but this seems to have been in the works for a very short period of time; i wonder what the trigger was to get the deal done, they must have been talks with Moto all along.

to strengthen the Android patent portfolio and defense. I did not see Motorola coming by a long shot. I suspected they would go after smaller companies, likely hardware component manufacturers and designers, but not an entire mobile phone company like Motorola.

Heck, if I had been forced to bet on which company I thought they would buy, from the mobile phone producers, it would have been Sony Ericsson or HTC, not Motorola.

As for future implications; I think this will work out well. Motorola has a strong IP portfolio that will help protect Android from current and future law suits. As well, it sounds like they will keep the two separate, so it won't give Motorola a huge advantage over the other manufacturers with regards to Android...

I envisioned a major purchase coming on the behalf of Google. However, this was not what I expected.

But to be honest, my main concern in all of this, is the extreme possibility that innovation can or will be temporarily stifled by moves like this. This greatly affects the consumers that look for the next big thing. I fully understand the strategy by Google to execute the purchase of Motorola to strengthen their defense in an industry plagued with litigation. However, the focus has now begun the process of patent disputes rather than innovation. All these patents will need to be hashed out before moving forward with further advancements or the epic wave of patent wars will continue to take center stage.

I really didn't see this coming. I knew google was looking to acquire more patent rights, I never dreamed they would accomplish that by buying the mobility division of Motorola. Very, very interesting. Potentially a game-changer. They're going to have much more control over hardware now. Perhaps they'll release a new flagship line of Motorola android phones?
