It really depends on who you believe. There is a whole lot of FUD going around about this right now. Everyone should definitely read the full article.

If you believe what the CTIA promises, (and I do,) this will be strictly opt-in. Basically, you will not be listed unless you ask be listed.

Also, they're not going to publish your number or sell the list. This is strictly about making it so people can get your number via 411 if you want them to. That's why it is just targeted at professionals who'd rather be reached at their cell phone than their office line. (Or professionals who have cut the cord and their cell is their only number, or pros who simply want both numbers to be available.)

Regardless, the point of this is not t...

Well put Mr. Brome... Verizon really seems to be pushing it's luck lately. For the Largest wireless carrier (For Now!) I'd expect more...
If the CTIA does as it says this could be great for business people. None the less I still am fearful about this info getting into the wrong hands. [I think I would opt out just on my own "Corporate Paranoia"]

Expect more? Last I checked Verizon Wireless wasn't listed as a non-profit organization. Why would they not want to funnel in more revenue?

Let me get this straight... large, successful organizations owe you something now? It's a two-way street, my friend. They're providing you a service for money. No one is doing anyone favors.

Just because a company is a Profit Organization doesn't mean that they do not share social responsibility. The problem with most (or all) corporations is Greed. Excess is never good even when it comes to money. Not allowing their subscribers to enter a free service (which all other Wireless Carriers or "Profit Organizations" have agreed to) is unfair.
So Yes I do expect more! And I realize I'm a dying breed... Which is sad.
Consumers are owed more espeshilly on the wages the Corporations are paying them.

I'd have to agree with the alchemist. They, as a company, have every right to decide what services to offer and what to charge for them. The catch is that as a consumer, you have the option of not doing business with them. Now granted when the contract comes into play, it makes it a little more difficult, but it's still up to you whether it's worth staying with one carrier or paying a contract termination fee. I do, however, think they're hanging on to their own directory for no reason (or a bad one). Ultimately it would benefit them (and their customers) more if they joined the rest of the carriers in the mass directory.

Well fortunately, there are regulations against unsolicited calls to mobile phones for that exact reason. It's not that telemarketers aren't able to get ahold of your cell phone number right now, it's that it's illegal for them to use it. So even though this becomes an easier way to find your number, solicitors still get fined for calling cell phones. If you get a call from a telemarketer on your cell, simply get the name of the company and report it.

Well golly gee whillikers, unless I totally misread the article, every major wireless carrier EXCEPT Verizon is making this available for free to their customers. I know for a fact that T-Mobile isn't going to be charging either to be listed or non-listed, so therefore VZW is the holdout on this one, which does actually make them appear money-grubbing...
