The FCC needs to do their job

They need to help with fixing the problem which are the GPS companies and their careless infrastructure. Lightsquared shouldn't have to compromise its business to accommodate an error that it didn't create, but then again lightsquared knew about this problem going in and agreed to fix the problem themselves, so they did ultimately bring this upon themselves.

Still to me the FCC should have never let the GPS companies to build so reckless to where their signal is pouring over on the L-band, knowing that in the future this spectrum was going to be wanted/needed to be used. SMH.

FYI..The GPS companies have no "signal pouring over L band. All their receivers do is read the GPS signals provided by the United States government. The receivers are not built very well, to reject adjacent channel interference. Until now, they didn't have to be because that band was not being used on Earth..The GPS companies have NO infrastructure, only a cheap product that reads radio signals as long as there are no interfering signals..(Lightsquared)

So from what you are saying still Lightsquared is in a position that is getting hammered by who ever is responsible for setting up the GPS infrastructure. GPS companies need to upgrade their receivers because by them being cheap and cutting cost is now causing another company possible billions of dollars. Now that hold part their we can go on and on about, the part that most intrigues me is that the government knew about this but yet still agreed to license the spectrum to Lightsquared to give them false hope, in short hoping that Lightsquared can some how miraculously fix the governments screwup.

Actually, both Lightsquared and the government knew about the issue going into the agreement. The government leased the band to Lightsquared on the condition they, Lightsquared come up with a way to not cause interference to the GPS system since that band was set up for space to ground only, not terrestrial use. The idea was for LS to engineers to come up with a solution, and prove to the government that there would be no interference .If it can't be figured out by Lightsquared engineers, the deal is off...that is the agreement with the government and I think it is a good one.. Now LS doesn't seem to be able to figured it out so they want a buffer, wasting spectrum..not part of the deal. There is no government screw up at all.. The only re...

What do you think about Cellstudents proposed solution?

There are two ways to fix this problem. Period.

1) Replace all the cheap, shoddy, accepting-out-of-band-transmissions-as-legiti mate-signals GPS receivers in the world.

2) Increase the guard band size so that cheapskates like Garmin, TomTom and Trimble can keep their lousy second rate radios functioning in the midst of an L-Band LTE rollout.

How crazy is this? "We won't let LightSquared use any of their spectrum unless they can use all of it!"

Nuts. Absolutely NUTS! It's underutilizable because the GPS makers build crappy radios that don't properly amplify ONLY the signals in the desired band.

Long term solutions?
