Sprint is just letting everyone be a virtual network off of them. And it's a good choice over Verizon becuase I personally think they are a very bad carrier. But really... everyone seems to be getting a peice of Sprint. Liberty Wireless, Qwest, Virgin Mobile, and now AT&T. I guess Sprint will be pulling up to be one of the top two carriers with all these new companies and customers...

😲 No! AT&T Wireless is the company with the GSM network (not AT&T), and Cingular is buying AT&T Wireless, including their GSM network.

This is totally separate. AT&T (not AT&T Wireless) is making this deal with Sprint. They are going to start an all-new carrier that uses the AT&T name and logo, but otherwise has absolutely nothing to do with AT&T Wireless!

Yep, Sprint is definitely signing MVNO deals left and right.

It's smart. The reason is capacity and spectrum. They have plenty of it. They were doing fine before 1xRTT, then they were very aggressive with 1xRTT voice-enabled phones, allowing them to double their network capacity, and do it faster than Verizon.

Plus, they're not saddled with AMPS hogging part of their spectrum like Verizon. And, assuming they hold out for EV-DV, they won't have to worry about EV-DO hogging part of their spectrum, either. All put together, that leaves Sprint with ample capacity and spectrum to sign as many MVNO deals as they please. They'd be crazy not to - why not put as much of their spectrum to work as they can?

Sprint is being very wise and they are positioning themselves for some nice network upgrades which these MVNOs will benefit from.

The lucent flexent (not sure about the name) base stations which sprint purchased in 2003 and is installing now are BLAST ready. That means a that those base stations can be upgraded to 3-20X capacity increase or more by adding extra antennas at the base station and new line cards. The base station is made to support such upgrades cost effectively at a later time.

the company is also said to be testing handsets with antenna diversity for deployment in the next 2 years. Some EV-DO handsets in korea already use this feature. It can give you a nice improvement in capacity and/or range regardless of the standar...
