I had a customer come in the other day - they said they just wanted a nice quality phone because they already had a laptop loaded with the features one might look for in a PDA-phone. The guy "didn't want a Motorola" - so I put him in the brand new Nokia 6103 which packs some solid features. He took it outside, close to a busy street, and made some calls. When he came back, he said he wanted something that had better call quality and felt more firm. In so many words, I told him to shut up, get over not wanting a Motorola, and try the RAZR. When he went outside and placed more calls (one of which was to his daughter who was in the store), he was surprised. She said he would never admit it, but the whole call he made to her was filled with "wow this phone seems to be pretty high quality." She said he mentioned the word "quality" probably 5 times.

I'll agree that Motorola has had some pretty nasty flops in the past, but so has Nokia (Nokia 1100 anyone?). Plus, they've come a LONG way. These days, Nokia seems to come up with silly little fashion phones. Their highest quality corporate phone is the Nokia 8801 which is way overpriced, and has the feature set of my Seiko. (I'm not comparing PDA phones - though the Q does a fine job for being a first try)

Everyone wants to keep harping on Motorola for following the success of the RAZR. How many of us would be screaming if they came out with something totally new that everyone hated? We'd look at something like the Nokia lipstick phone and say "wtf, Moto?" --- they take something that works - they listen to their customers - improve upon it, and sell it. Who can blame them for that? Anyone remember the Nokia 51xx series - eh hem, talk about stale leftovers in the fridge.

My next phone is the RIZR - though for customers who can't afford something so nice, I look forward to being able to sell them a SCPL - especially if it's less than $50!
