So many people rushed to get their 'unlimited' data plans to be grandfathered in only to be slapped in the face....the whole 5% of top users is total bs. I never exceed 3 gb of data ever. Two months ago my son was streaming a bunch of videos and had inadvertently turned the wi-fi off. With a week left in my billing cycle i was conveniently notified via text that i was within 500 mb of reaching my 5gb cap and that extra data would be charged accordingly if i go over. All of this 'soft cap' and 'heaviest users' rhetoric is garbage.

Stop lying. Since I got this crap inspire which uses tons of data because of HTC sense, my phone has used over 10 gb per month and never not once have I recieved a text from ATT about approaching a 5 gb limit. Stop spreading lies to try to discredit a company.

..said the at&t rep. I dont think anybody here needs to discredit at&t, they are doing a fine job of that themselves by lying and alienating their subscriber base with bullshit lies and deceit.

I use between 20 and 60 gb a month. So, yeah, that 5 gb thing is either a lie (if you're using a smartphone), or you're under a standard phone code in their system, or you subscribed to a standard phone plan, bought a smartphone, and switched the SIM to save $20 and game the system. Either way, I'm sure to get their damn texts.

Ok ill wait for the screen shot and after you do that ill post my last 6 months of data and prove my point. Unlike you and your lame fanboy comments I could care less about any of these companies, I just know when somebody is spouting out bs to try to sound good. So hurry up with that phantom message.

The message is sent in the same fashion as the data request you can make from your phone, *DATA#. My point is that even as a low data user, the fact that they sent me a message to warn me of approaching the 5gb limit really shows how tenacious they are and that they are targeting anyone on a data plan. The warning message just stated that i will be charged .05 for every 100mb over. At&t contract snippet below.

A voice plan is not required with DataConnect plans.

We may, at our discretion, suspend your account if we believe your data usage is excessive, unusual or is better suited to another rate plan. If you are on a data plan that does not include a monthly MB/GB allowance and additional data usage rates, you agree that AT&T has the ...

You do know you're talking about a 5gb connection for a DATA CONNECT CARD. NOT a smartphone?

An unlimited data plan...has no 5GB cap.

Idiot.

...
GeeksAreBest

Aug 1, 2011, 7:15 AM
There's no distinction? There most certainly is.

One is a data connect card, meant to provide a computer with data access.

The other is a phone.

Your post really had nothing to do with the topic at all other than to voice a half a**ed opinion that only marginally had something in common with the article simply because "you use data". You aren't even effected by this. You have a hard cap meanning at 2GB and 5GB respectivly for each service, you get charged overages. What's happening here is that instead of overages, after so much high usage the plan speed will be throttled.

Your argument is moot simply because...yeah. They do send you notices for overages on handsets and data connect lines. And? You use over the plan, you pay.

why are you so quick to judge others who have an different viewpoint as yourself.

I for one...hope this is a huge success for them.

I hope it works out so well, that they move all their plans to throttling instead of billing.

just because they have a different viewpoint doesn't mean anything other than they have a different viewpoint than you.

It's just as fair for them to say you're one of those consumers who feel like they're entitled to the world.

Where do you find the logic to reason with what at&t is doing? They're trying to wean people off their cellular network and onto their wi-fi but did you ever notice how slow it is? And then they are pushing LTE for what? Their current network is more than adequate for everything you can do on a smartphone except for streaming high res video or large video files. Verizon took the right approach by at least giving consumers the option to pay, dearly, for more data but not at&t. Just goes to show where the confidence in network lies and falls.

I hope that wasnt an attempt at humor because it sucked. I proved my point. He/She was lying. Att has never sent out a text to them and he/she felt the need to try to sound important. In turn, they sounded like an idiot. As stated, i could care less about verizon, att, sprint, or t-mobile. I just call bs when i see it.

The at&t mob is seriously out for blood. Anyway...I'm stuck with At&t for work with family and have been for 15 plus years as they came and went here and they're just getting worse. With LTE really aiming at making cellular traffic all data, using VOIP for voice calls, i don't know where this data cap crap is ultimately heading. Seems like they're simply gonna get every penny wherever they possibly can and by whatever means.

How are YOU going to stop them?

You have already committed yourself to supporting their practice by saying in another post that you will not leave them because you feel the other two carriers(Sprint and Tmobile) are insignificant.

This is a classic quintessential display of useless oxymoron complaints.

Either take action by leaving, or don't. Anything less than this, only placates the carrier and you lose.

Verizon already soft caps the heaviest users. Their top is 2% though, not 5%.

As far as data usage...I had a guy who used 90gb of data in a month. I can watch netflix whenever I want, stream pandora whenever I want and still make sub-5GB on my iPhone...90gb is stupidly excessive and frankly, users like that deserve to but cut off at the waist.

Yeah, unlimited is unlimited but abusing it doesn't do anyone any good.

I fail to see how anyone can abuse an unlimited plan. Yes that is a lot of data and I would implore them to get a life, but they signed up for an unlimited plan...... Rather than have practical things like throttling or caps in place from the beginning, the carriers chose to offer unlimited plans and made sure to saturate the market with smartphones. Sounds to me like the carriers were asking for this situation...... Just saying.

Unlimited is UNLIMITED.... The terms and conditions make any refernce to playing nice, reasonble use, consideration for others, or data hogging ... Especially when these high end pda devices are loaded from the carrier with data sucking apps... Sounds more like AT&T, VZW & T mo is setting their subscribers up for failure ... They are NOT protecting their network or ensuring that all users have a consistent experience by putting heavy users in time out until the end of their cycle or charging an average of $10 GB Penalty the are doing it for the bottom line ... To achieve an obtuse operating margin. If I have the money they would not care if I used mulitple terrabytes and my neighbor on the same network couldnt get anything due to my usage...

The thing is...unlimited is unlimited but that arrangement was before people figured out how to download torrents to phones or full-size games to phones. I have a friend of mine at work here who rooted his phone and figured out how to get a full (though modified) copy of Diablo II: LoD onto his phone over the air. He did this with Starcraft and one of the original Warcraft games. That's easily 30gb of data downloaded in a few hours to his phone.

You can't tell me that the unlimited plans were designed to handle that traffic because frankly...the ability (technologically speaking) to do that didn't exist back when the plans were set out.

Yeah, unlimited is unlimited but there are *sensible* limits on usage and that sense is what the top...
