Why the need for 4G anyway?

At&t is not cheap at all and sucks as it is. This would bad for t-mobile users to say the least but let's not go there. From a legal perspective this does seem like the most valid argument to throw at a judge. At&t seems to have a convenient excuse for all of their shortcomings to fend off the lawsuits in regards to service isuues.
In regards to my comment, what justifies the need for 4G in the most rural of areas anyways? For all practical purposes they have at least 2G right? And those that need more bandwidth surely use wi-fi or wired networks already. At&t has a history of absolute failures in regards to everything they say they will do and this whole merger reeks of bs to simply eliminate competition.

There is no need for 4G in those areas, at&t is using this as an argument to try to push the merger, nothing more.

EDGE is fast enough to stream Youtube (it is for me, anyways) HD is not required.

And yes, all the people that live in the sticks already have wired connections or even Satellite internet, which offers high download speeds, but low latency.

Rural america does not need 4G speeds. Probably doesnt even need 3G either, or even EDGE. I bet most places that have no service now would be happy with AMPS service, or even TDMA if they still existed.

i'm glad you know whats best for rural customers. i'm fairly certain that urban user don't NEED 4G either. however, most people that WANT smart phones WANT 4G regaurdless of where you live. att is not in the business of proving for peoples needs it is providing for peoples wants. what did people do 10 or 15 years ago when every one didn't have cell phones, they got by just fine, but people want them, so the powers that be at att said lets give them what they want and make a buck on it.

I think the lawyers should use this as a spring board to show the disingenuous intentions of at&t. I live in the heart of the city and most always have full bars, although they are constantly dancing. I have an Atrix and their HSPA coverage is great when it works but their coverage is very spotty. Literally half the time I cannot initiate an outgoing call on first try and they drop constantly. They push their need to provide 4G to the swamps and can't even do it in the heart of the city. My comments are based on my own experience over the last 15+ years. I've seen time and time again all of the advertising for the millions they are investing and how they are improving their network. But I think the proof is in the real world experience and t...

Not at all. I would love it if they had a solid network that honestly worked half as good as they tout it as. They had an amazing network when it was TDMA, I would literally be shocked on the very rare occasion my call would drop. It all went downhill when they went the GSM route and never stopped. I live in Honolulu,Hawaii where no company has any excuse for a bad network, period. You get five bars everywhere and with it you get garbled voices and dropped calls constantly. Their condescending arrogance ticks me off because they are constantly touting the millions of dollars they are spending here and nothing has changed in the last 10 years in regards to their network quality at least locally. Whenever I go to their stores they try so hard ...

Yeah! They have Mobi PCS here which is a local start up on CDMA and they are doing so well At&t should be embarrassed. They have amazing coverage and prices that are not much higher than the taxes and surcharges on my At&t bill alone! Would be a great alternative and one I am seriously considering....

You are the first that I have seen on phonescoop that complimented the coverage of Metro. Everyone else has been bashing them like crazy for the longest time.
If people would take the time and look at what has been out for years....it's called a coverage map ladies and gentlemen they would know if it is right for them.
