Nanny State
The government should worry about regulating over spending then apps for smartphones.

This is why the country is in the sad state it is right now - too much government.
The FDA is ridiculous to want to "regulate" this kind of thing. Why don't they worry more about keeping bacteria out of our foods and such.

One's iPhone or Android device ain't exactly a CAT Scan machine.

Exactly. what's to stop a camera expert from putting an X-ray filter into any camera? It can be done, and who says that a smartphone cant be outfitted with biometric sensors? It certainly can. Just becuase no company makes one, does not mean you can not get one.

X-Ray filters. have you seen an x-ray machine, or portable one? They tend to be a tad larger then one's Droid X.

Absolutely regulate these apps. What if they give false readings and cause false information. We all know there are apps out there that don't work properly, after all, these are just cheep phones with nowhere near the high quality parts a medical device uses. Without regulation of business, the consumer would be screwed at every turn..(credit card companies, drugs, unsafe cars, you name it)

you've got half a brain! I was getting worried, but I agree totally. I work in EMS on a voulenteer basis and some of these are great. I've got one on my phone where I can link up with the Lifepak monitors and record the rythm strip on my phone for review later. They're great but do need regulation because there is a huge margin of error. A shadow on an x-ray or a squiggly line on a heart monitor could be life or death. It's definitely a good thing

You changed my mind, these things are beyond the scope of practice of an EMT and they should be banned from using them.
