If you buy a new phone now such as the V710, or CDM9900, would that be able to be upgraded to work on the new EV-Do system? Thanks

According to the data on phonescoop, the LG VX 8000 is the only phone that supports CDMA-EV-DO. V710 and CDM9900 (at least for now) supports CDMA-1xRTT, which I believe is the same thing as CDMA 2000

1xRTT, EV-DO, or any wireless standard to date, is a hardware feature and can't be upgraded. Even EDGE, which is relatively simple, needs to be implemented in hardware.

There is technology on the horizon called Software-Defined Radio (SDR), which would allow such upgrades. There are some companies experimenting with this for towers, but I haven't heard about any handsets supporting it yet - not even prototypes in the lab. It might be something that requires more processing power than can currently be done in a phone.
