Just get a 4G smartphone NOW, while unlimited is still available, that's what I did. Got the Droid Charge May 20th, and now I'm all set.

It would be great if I actually had 4G I could use my phone with. Verizon keeps starting 4G in oddball areas. It doesn't seem coordinated, it looks like it's just random.
I honestly believe you should not sell a product in an area when you do not have the service to back it.
Where I live, Fort Myers/Naples no 4G save RSW airport. Yet pull those areas up on Verizon's coverage map, it shows 4G and extended 4G. Umm, yeah sure.
