Any validity to no one will really be "grandfathered" in on any current unlimited plans?

In reading a related article posted on Android Central yesterday, the wording was very specific to mention something to the effect of customers who now have unlimited data plans would be grandfathered in for the duration of their current contracts once the tiered plans go into effect in July. I'm thinking that the mention of "current" contract is key in that as soon as you go to upgrade to a new phone thus requiring you re-up for another 2-year contract, you will then be required to select one of the tiered data plans. Usually when people are approaching their NE2 date (for those who still have them)the focus is really on getting that new phone that you've been dying to get and not really so much on contract/plan details, so I'm wondering ...

I was in a store today and the rep told me that as long as you don't change the plan yourself there's nothing to worry about, including upgrades.

That VZW Store Rep was lying to you. In a press release I read kicking you off unlimited when you go for an upgrade is absolutely the plan. I had also read from Verizon directly that even if you buy your own phone full-price & just change equipment after your contract is up you will be required to choose a new tiered data plan. Bottom line is unlimited with Verizon is over & unlike AT&T, they want you off it right away when your contract is up.

But that dosent change the fact that if you want unlimited data then your still grandfathered in until you upgrade or initiate a change to your equipment or plan.

Hopefully this will motivate people to get the unlimited data plan now before the new ...

That gives me less than a week to buy and activate a Motorola Droid Pro from ebay. Crunch time.

I sent customer service an email about this, telling them exactly how unhappy I am about this. They responded in a pretty detailed email, and one of the comments was:

"Keep in mind that the changes that are coming in the near future about Tier data plans will not affect you unless you add a new line to your wireless account. "

Now, I don't know if that means that when you upgrade, you won't be forced into a tiered data plan like the article states. I replied to them asking for clarification on exactly that, and I'll post when I hear. Last time I emailed VZW (it was about them getting rid of one-year contracts, which really angered me because I like to get new phones often), they replied within a day, and also called me to talk direc...

I figured I may as well post their whole reply, as well as my original message to them. I'll do the same when they reply again.

I received a response from VZW. They even got the dates wrong - I have been a customer since the spring of 2004 and have not changed carriers once during that time. Idiots.

Good morning,

Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless through our website. My name is Trelawn, and I am happy to assist you with your data feature inquiry.

When we mention "grandfathered" regarding our data plans, this means you will be able to keep your current price plan and features until you make changes to your account. If you do not upgrade your phone, you will be able to keep your Unlimited Data feature; however, if you were to upgrade your phone after the changes to our data feature requirement, you will have to take advantage of our newer plans and lo...

Yes, we will be "grandfathered" as long as you don't change data plans. If you decide to upgrade to a 4G phone that may be considered as a data plan upgrade.

I sent an email and actually discussed on the phone with Verizon. He basically said to watch the website for an official date for the tiered pricing.

I have the Droid 1 and have been messing with ROM's which added life to my OG - waiting on the Bionic. Well that may not be the case now. I may have to upgrade early to a different 4G smartphone to get locked in.
