I don't agree. First off, contracts are there specifically to subsidize the handsets, in order to get customers hooked on the carrier's service, and contracts aren't going to go away. If it's economically viable for wireless carriers to subsidize, they will continue to do so.

I've been seeing the opinion expressed that phones will remain very expensive. Has anyone given any thought to the fact that one of the reasons WHY they're expensive is precisely BECAUSE the carriers subsidize? Unlocked phones will mean that the models which are most marketable across the largest number of carriers will be cheaper due to volume, and phones which are by their nature only usable with one carrier, i.e. Nextel for example, will remain expensive due t...

yeah unlock them all and lets see the best carrier win. i think unlocking will open a new realm of options for the consumer. choices sometimes make things confusing at first but it's better than having no choice at all.

GSM will rule, because its the best mousetrap.

But the competition among wireless phone makers is already fierce, with or without carrier subsidies.

Computers have gotten cheaper because of economies of scale, lower production costs, and a shift to profits from hardrives to software, peripherals and assorted accessories. Places like Office Max don't sell computers, but they sure have tons of the stuff you need to add to the computer to make it more productive. Thats because the money is in the add-ons.

In wireless, the money is in the monthly service fee.

What would happen to the consumer in a case of the T720, which is and was a total piece of $hit? Would Motorola give you the option of a new phone, or have to give you a new phone? At this point the carrier VZW in my case has updated, changed, changed again, and again. If I was not not locked into a contract you can rest assured I would have been history.

And so what if phones weren't free. Would you rather have a better phone with more flexibility or a cheap piece of crap?

Why is it we in the U.S. want the latest and greatest technologies, the biggest and the flashiest and will pay for it, EXCEPT when it comes to cell phones?

People will pay $5000 for a TV but cry if the cell phone cost them $99. Why? Makes no sense to me.
