Lightsquared is desparate and *very* close to inking a deal with (insert wireless carrier name here).

Basically anyone that will ink a deal with them and solve their GPS frequency interruptions!

Isn't that their reason for trying to buy T-mobile? How can they make a deal if they're short on spectrum?

hey, they paid for and own the spectrum that they want to use. If interference is caused, that shouldn't be their problem, as they paid for that spectrum.

They have satellite spectrum. FCC told them they could use it for terrestrial service if they could prove it didn't interfere with other devices. Looks like it does interfere with GPS..If the interference is bad, people couldn't use their GPS in cars and aircraft navigation would be impacted. Just because they own (lease from Gov.) it doesn't mean they can use it how they wish..

That is ridiculous. (sp?). The feds should have done this testing themselves to assure they were not selling something that could not even be used. I think that lightsquared should sue the federal government. That like somebody selling you a car and saying, well wait, you cant drive over 100 kph, and you cant drive on every other thursday. Its ridiculous. Doesnt seem fair to anybody except the government, who is making money.

Lightsquared didn't buy the spectrum for this purpose..They asked the government if they could use the spectrum for something different than intended. The government, giving them the benefit of the doubt, said if there's no interference you can..I wouldn't want my tax dollars used to do their testing for them..

Not just that though, I think Tofuchong is missing the major point. Which is the Gov told them before they even purchased the spectrum that if they can not get it to not interfere with GPS then you can not use it as a disclaimer. Now Lightsquared took in their own hands and say, ok we'll take it anyways as we are sure we can get it to work. Now that it doesnt that is their fault for taking that chance, not the feds. The feds did their part by telling them about the disclaimer before any money was taken or any deal was made.

Lightsquared is known for MSS(Mobile Satellite Systems). Lightsquared asked for permission to go forward with a terrestrial based network in hopes of providing wholesale LTE. This would require the use of spectrum holdings originally reserved for satellite transmission. The FCC was interested in the idea and entertained the thought of having more competition in the marketplace.

If I'm understanding this correctly, the military had escalated concerns of GPS interference. So the FCC only waived the regulations and allowed Lightsquared to move forward under stipulations that they could prove that their L-Band spectrum would not interfere with the corresponding GPS L-Bands between 1.2ghz and 1.6ghz.

The GPS satellite signals are wea...

Huh? Lightsquared developed their technology and assured everyone it would work and NOT interfere with GPS. Lightsquared promised they would work out all the kinks and the bugs. Now it doesn't work....Their revenue model that was supposed to make them a big time carrier and earn them BILLIONS of dollars is in jeopardy all because of their own mistakes and arrogance...and you want to blame the government??? thats rich!
