What happened to the "great" GSM Network 🤣 . Sounds like AT&T/Cingular will eventually try to get roaming agreements with verizon's CDMA Network, who has already released 3g broadband speed internet access in two cities. Nationwide buy the end of the year.

Great "GSM" network? ATTWS's upgrade plan was convert to GSM, upgrade to EDGE, then go to UMTS. W-CDMA is different from the CDMA 1xEV-DO (or was it DV), so there is won't be any purpose to establish roaming agreements with verizon.

Verizon can upgrade there network all they want.. Ever seen a verizon map WITHOUT there roaming partners? Pretty shabby. Plus there still gonna charge $80.00 for data a network that most of the world could care less about. Enjoy your 2 year contracts...

The two technologies are not compatible. UMTS is GSM just based on W-CDMA instead of TDMA. It will not work with Verizon or Sprint networks. In fact W-CDMA is even better than CDMA and is what they use in Japan and South Korea. Hmmm, maybe UMTS phones will work on Japanese and Korean W-CDMA networks.

actually i think south korea does use CDMA2000x1 EV-DO so the phones they use there should theoretically be compatible with verizon and sprint networks... japan is the one that uses WCDMA, although i think the KDDI netowrk in japan also uses CDMA

🤣

Most Amerians don't care for 3G. I pick up 900kbps on my wi-fi connection on my Apple Powerbook G4. Why the hell would i want to surf the web on a tiny mobile phone?

The Yanks are yet to get into text messaging in a big way as well.

I don't think the point is to surf the web on a tiny mobile phone. W-CDMA and EDGE for that matter are really only practical for tethering to a PDA or notebook. For WAP browsing , my Nokia 6820 EDGE phone isn't significantly faster than my old Sprint Startac.

I agree, the web connecting abilities are not the issue. However, there are two things that I do not understand about this move. First, is cingular even going to support WCDMA when it takes over ATT? Second, why is ATT choosing to skip part of their developement and push a system that is not yet ready when they have already lost a majority of their customers? ATT is just not going to be effecient for a while no matter what they do.

Cingular is on the same development path as AT&T Wireless. Going to GSM was the first step in offering a new 3G network. UMTS the the next step AT&T has been planning the launch of UMTS since it finish all it's GSM markets. Cingular will soon follow and support the new service. And AT&T isn't skipping any part of their deployment. The plan was to offer GSM service with GPRS upgrade to EGDE technology to offer higher data speeds then upgrade to full UMTS which is their 3G network. As for pushing the system they are only opening it in 4 markets which is the same as they did with GSM. They are test markets to test the system. They aren't just going to drop it on everyone.

Idiots who have nothing of value to add should not post on here either. You sound a lot less intelligent than I do.
As far as Cingular's plans, we do not have much information from them where I am. Thus, I was unaware what their capability was to support UMTS. You can all hate on Verizon all you want. The point is they are on top right now and not going anywhere. Strip down Verizon's map and you still have double what T-Mobile offers.
I am interested to see what the bandwidth capability will be with UMTS. The GSM network switch boasted 144k bursts, but realy ran about 14.4k in most places. Verizon's current mobile office kits that work with most of their phones run 115-130k. That is pretty decent for the time being. Furthe...

Last time I checked, UMTS would be a stepping stone in the ability to have what's equivalent to network-wide wi-fi. Wouldn't you like to get 900kbps on your crummy apple outside of the coffeeshop sometime?
