I remember I had a Kaiser from AT&T, it had carrier apps, but they also could be removed. And the WM tethering app was hidden in with the system files, which was able to be given an icon with a little work.
Having carrier apps is one thing, but putting toxic one's as mentioned, is wrong.

Yes it would because even over the phone you still have to return it, and when they get it, they take a look at it and see that you did stuff you weren't supposed to you get charged full retail price for the replacement.
If I had $1 for every customer who thought that they would be able to pull one over by doing that I would have.....well, a few dollars anyway.
