They are going to get rid of unlimited data and give everyone a cap limit so they can get the extra charges. This is a way to tone down the data connections in the network. better grab a unlimited data package while you can. I seen this coming a long ways. The world evolves around data and thats a money maker.

They announced they were doing it like a year ago and held off just for the iPhone 4 release. This isn't new news, just a slow news day.

Jay, Yes for a limited time. Then you will need to pay $29.99. I read it somewhere yesterday. As for the Charge, if you are going for it I would go for it now. Amazon has it for $199 compared to $300.00

I don't understand the rush to get grandfathered in for two years. In my experience wireless providers will make you chose a current plan when you chose to upgrade your device. Are you guys planning to buy future devices flat out in thr future?

Actually, most keep you grandfathered unless you opt to change.

To a certain extent. Not sure where the legal mumbo jumbo sits, but Verizon at their discretion can force customers when they make changes to their account to accept a new price structure.

For example, say you go buy your next VZW phone OUTRIGHT and go to activate it on your line; I feel quite strongly that the rep is going to ask you to pick a new data package because VZW's system will have deleted the unlimited data feature.

So the tiered LTE will probably be introduced when this promo expires.

So since there isn't any LTE smartphones currently on the market, if I waited til an LTE smartphone came out that had the specs that I wanted, like a REAL keyboard, . . .would I be able to use the unlimited 3G data plan on an LTE capable smartphone and get unlimited 4G data?

Or in order to have unlimited LTE data would I have to get an LTE smartphone while unlimited LTE data is still available.

There are no plans that's just for 4G LTE. Data is data no matter if its 3G or. 4G. As long as you have a unlimited dqta plan then your good. I have the 29.99 unlimited data plan that I had with Alltel and I am able to use my HTC Thunderbolt with 4G . There's no 4G here yet but my indicator has been flashing 4G lately so its coming to my location real soon.

So I don't have to worry about the evil tiered data coming this summer, even when I do upgrade when Vzn finally comes out with an LTE smartphone that has the specs that I want. Am I understanding you right?

As long as u don't change your plan your good. I still have my Alltel plan and have been thru VZW Blackberries to Android and now I have the HTC Thunderbolt. Never changed my plan. At the store and over the phonethey try to talk me into it but I didn't. U can also do your order online and never say anything bout changing plans. I work for VZW and once your grandfathered into a plan u can keep it as long as its compatible with your phone. But more likely any plan that has data can be use on any phone. There Alltel plans with a iPhone on it.

Sounds good! Now all I have to do is wait, and keep waiting for Vzn to actually come out with a LTE smartphone that has a REAL keyboard.

Thanks for your input. In all likeliness I will end up getting an LTE slider smartphone on Amazon.

And again, thanks. It's nice to come across somebody on Phone Scoop who isn't a prick.

The key is you can keep a grandfathered plan or feature for as long as you don't change anything. At some point, Verizon will not allow you to change to new hardware unless you move to current pricing. Just like the old America's choice plans. Some people still have them, but certain phones aren't compatible with that plan, so if a customer upgrades to a particular phone they must switch to a nationwide plan.
If you hold off and don't get a 4G phone and Verizon changes to capped data plans, then when you upgrade to a 4G device it will require a plan change. If you go for 4G now, you could quite possibly insert your sim card into any 4G device in the future and keep your existing feature. However, if you do an upgrade to get a discount on ...

That is also Tru. The best way to determine is if you do have a grandfathered plan and is eligible for upgrade is to try a upgrade with current 4G phone online and see if it will allow you to keep your current plan. Just don't submit the order and you will be fine.

The big if is "compatible with your phone." VZW has the flexibility to mandate all new LTE phones activate with the new pricing whenever pricin...

"They are going to get rid of unlimited data and give everyone a cap limit so they can get the extra charges."

And you just proved you know NOTHING about how the wireless business works.

Here's the real truth: banwidth is a finite resource, the nation is experiencing a bandwidth crunch and we will soon be running out. Anyone who thinks he can get truly 'unlimited' data doesn't live in a little place I like to call 'reality', you can't get an unlimited amount of ANYTHING. Learn to accept that.

There are a set amount of minutes in a day, and therefore also in a month, but you can sign up for an unlimited minutes plan. It doesn't mean there's no limit to the availability of the resource, it means you will be billed one flat save regardless of your usage. In effect, physics and reality are limiting you, but the carrier is not.

This means I can use as much data as I want without going over and occuring extra charges. Can you understand that. I'm refering to what I am covered by, not the carrier. Put some reality on that Dum-Bone! 😎

You're on the right path...but...and yes there is a but here, there is not really such a thing as "unlimited data". There is only so much spectrum and bandwith out there to go around thanks to our lovely Nazi Leaders...the FCC 🙂

Though at the same time about %80 of smart phone users only hit about 1.7GBs a month. So some carriers that sell "Unlimited" or a Higher-Cap (US Cellular) are most likely doing so needlessly.

Despite all this, I agree with you and it would be advisable for the power users out there to jump on now while they still can.

While spectrum and, concomitantly, bandwidth are indeed finite resources, your attempt to blame the FCC is woefully misplaced. If not for a regulatory body, such as the FCC, we would have no spectrum usable for mobile communications. All spectrum would be ridden with interference, as broadcasters and squatters all tried to outdo each other with high power transmissions. It would be an electromagnetic version of gridlock -- as if all the cars on the road were free...

I have four Android smartphones on my account and between the lot of us we consume about 3 to 4 Gigs of cellular data per month- yet I'm paying $120.00 for four data packages!

That's $30 to $40 a gig! Talk about a rip off! I have Wi-Fi everywhere I go except for work, and I don't have time to stream music or video when I'm at work, so 3G is good enough there.

This is a good thing in the long run. It will encourage customers to offload to Wi-Fi and save Verizon money, while at the same time reducing network congestion for the folks out there who are willing to pay for 3G or LTE 24x7.

As long as the bundle rate ends up being less than $20 a GB, I'm all over this one. Sign me up!

The rest of you network hogs can go to Sprint. T...
