Why This Is Mandatory.

I hear everyone making a Carrier Vs Government issue on this. However, much is not being consumed within minds of what lasting detriment this will have on consumers if not mandated.

First: Voice calling as we know it, will be done through 4G technology in the very near future. It's very important that people realize this because this will eliminate the current way it is used now. With the top two carriers acquiring the last of valuable spectrum for 4G, it will be impossible for the smaller carriers to compete at this level and offer communication to their subscribers. The smaller will then die. We need more competition; Not less.

Second: The argument of "Smaller carriers should build out instead of relying on the larger", is growing...

+1 Couldn't have said it better myself. Anyone who thinks otherwise is just plain blind and/or stupid.

That is exactly how to kill any legitimacy to your argument, too. Nice job. Thanks.

A little over the top, I admit, but the truth hurts and it hardly kills anything. Now, I understand you hold an opposing view (after the fact), and in your case (and only a few select others) I would make an exception to my statement. I find you neither blind or stupid...normally ;) In this case, we simply disagree. I've made several other posts on this topic with my complete thoughts on the subject which more or less mirror the OPs.

Incase I didn't make it clear, I meant no offense with my statement. I would rephrase it, but saying "most of you who think otherwise..." just doesn't sound right lol.

I did not think you would recover, but you did a great job. That is essentially where we are. It is like religion and politics. People have their own beliefs while we can sound off the truth is few will ever change their minds. I am a Libertarian and have been since before I even knew what one was. I wrote a paper in the ninth grade detailing why Socialism is EVIL. I still believe it. I am not an anarchist. I do believe we need government, but too much of it is a bad thing. So you're right... We can dance for days and days. I am just going to state my opinion and move on and everyone else will do the same. Nothing changes...

No. And it does not have to be either. The Feds do not have the right to set prices. They simply are over stepping their bounds here. However, I would prefer to see them require Verizon and AT&T to keep their 1x and GSM voice networks running than to tell them they MUST let these little *Bleeper* carriers use their data networks.

Curious...what do you have against "these little *Bleeper* carriers"? Are you afraid of them bogging down the networks or what? You almost seem to have vicious animosity towards them and I am curious as to why?

Wouldn't this be the same thing as what you are trying to defend? Government forcing a carrier to do something.

Technology must evolve. It is the natural scientific path. The beautiful aspect of 4G technology, is the ability to be more cost effective to the operator as well as the consumer. However, it also consolidates the voice and data into one entity. Having the carrier keep older technology running, negates the purpose of 4G. It will be several years before the current system is shut down but the time scale for regulations takes awhile. It is best to plan for the future.

No. Setting rates is a whole 'nother ball game. They already have a history of forcing carriers and television stations to keep analog running.

If they can't afford to advance their business they shouldnt have gotten into it. You know what I wouldnt do if I couldnt afford to compete with mcdonalds, open a burger joint across the street. Why should cell phone companies be the only ones who dont have do their own work is what I dont get?

In alot of cases it has more to do than affording it. In most cases it would be impossible for another carrier, even if they could afford it, to set up shop. Carriers don't own the airwaves they use and are already required by regulation/law to allow voice roaming at a cost, they simply refuse to do so for data simply because it is not "required" for them to do so. The public has become dependant on data services. Voice roaming was made a required due to public interests...now that data access is in the publics interest, data roaming should follow suit.

Well now that is not a valid argument at all. The smaller companies are trying different plans and different ways of doing things. Some will be successful and some won't, but if we go by your example above why should anyone bother starting a business? I mean they can't possibly have the funding of the larger companies that have been existance for decades so I guess we should all just roll over and die.
The fact remains because they are a larger company there will always be certain advantages such as getting phone and network technologies faster etc. People that want to take advantage of that will stay with Verizon whether or not Verizon is forced to share. Personally I don't understand why this is such a hot topic. Technoloy is movi...
