Im all up for bashing Verizon, but i kind of agree with them on this one. Why would any new carrier work on rolling out anything if they can just piggy back off the hard work of the major carriers.

Because:
1) A duopoly will be very bad for the consumer,
2) Because both AT&T and Verizon have benefited hugely from billion's of dollars worth of the most valuable spectrum (850Mhz) over the years, which they got for very little or nothing -- i.e. they've had a leg up from the start, compared with PCS carriers. Spectrum is a public resource, despite any auctions for the licenses, and a requirement of operating with those licenses must be that it serves the public good, NOT JUST the corporate good.

quasi-socialism is what you get when the government owns and auctions the spectrum that's given to private entities.

1) While i agree, not sure what that statement has to do with this topic.

2)I'm by no means an expert, but it isnt Verizon, at&t, or to some degree Sprint's fault they got in on the ground floor. That's like saying someone who bought a bunch of land 15 years ago should sell at discount compared to what its worth now just so someone new can put up a mall.

Plus, and this is just a question, with inflation is starting up now really that much higher than what it was 20 yrs ago? Im sure it is at least a little higher with demand and all but still.

Who said anything about a duopoly?? This has little to do with that, IMHO. The government is PROactively imposing governmental control over a certain aspect of the industry.

Heck....by their standards, lets ALL wait for Apple to perfect the iPad and then we'll all just use their design!!

I can understand if the smaller carriers are getting gouged....but there has to be a price they must pay for resting on the laurels of another company.

That's the whole point of this. The mandate will keep the smaller carriers from being gouged and fall to extinction.

There are so many times that I stop and hope more than often that our Government would take my tax paying money and apply it to some sort of consumer interests. This would be one of those times. Enjoy it while it is there to fully represent a legitment concern.
