Why??

Why does the Bold have the same size screen? 2.8 inches is so puny. There is plenty of room at the bottom & top of this phone to make the screen larger. Look at the Motorola Android Pro, that form factor is so much nicer. Why no improvement from RIMM??
Also, why is the display still '640x480' when iPhone and Android phones are twice as good, twice as crisp?
Also, why is the camera still 5 megapixels when iPhone and Android cameras are so, so, so much better, 8 megapixels??!!
This is ridiculous. Blackberry is using the same specs form the Bold that I purchased back in 2008. Who is running this compnay? How can they be so stupid? How can they ignore innovation? Very, very disappointing.

You're mistaken. 640x480 might be low for a large screen, but it's double what was featured on the Bold 9000, and on a smaller screen it makes the pixel density similar to iPhone 4.

The specs are hugely improved over the original: much faster processor, a lot more RAM, built-in memory, and 4G support. If you don't like the form factor anymore, that's different, but personally, I loved the 9000, and this is the Bold update I've been waiting for.

BlackBerry has always served a different market. Their primary focus has always been business users, not consumers. Keyboard and email are key, not camera and a huge display for video, etc.

And that is why they will fail. They will crowded out by phones that are aimed more toward consumers that are becoming versatile enough to also be secure enough for enterprise. Apple is constantly making security updates to eat away at the business market. So why would BB do the same thing toward the consumer market? Idiotic management is why.

I agree....the screen resolution on a 2.8 inch screen is awesome. 5 MP camera is awesome....apple also has 5mp camera on it. Higher resolution, more RAM and memory plus the 1.2 GHz processor definitely sounds like improvements. Look at blackberry from 4 years ago and look at Blackberry now and tell me theres no innovation.

The phone isn't anywhere near the same as the Bold 9000. The processor is a lot faster (which is speaking volumes, since the 9000's processor is still acceptable today), a touchscreen has been added without having to deal with a slider function, there are changes to the OS (which will probably be very welcome), and you also get to have more internal memory, meaning that your phone will be able to do more things at the same time.

We understand that Blackberries have always been a little media-deficient, but the point of owning a Blackberry isn't the (still-acceptable) media function. Anything over a 5MP camera is almost never going to be needed by someone who bought their phone primarily for email. The phone doesn't need a huge screen to ...

As an avid Blackberry user I bet most users will not upgrade their phone simply because the 'processor is faster' or 'memory is larger'. Thus, this phone is barely an upgrade.

The fact remains:
1) The BB Bold screen size is the smallest available on a smartphone, and not improved at all! Blackberry could have made it larger, but they chose not to.
2) the screen resolution on Apple and Google smartphones is much, much better. Once again, RIMM chose not to innovate.
3) The camera on Apple and Google phones is much, much better. Blackberry gives us a 5 megapixel camera, when Google has been putting 8 mega pixel cameras in their phones for 2 years now!? And the iPhone camera is terrific. Yes, I use my Blackberry primarily for email, but e...

Maybe you missed my post or ignored it, but you're wrong that the resolution on the iPhone and Android phones is better. Their screens are larger, but the pixel density on this new phone is right up there with the iPhone 4. The Bold 9000's resolution was 320x240. The resolution of the new Bold is also much higher than that of the Torch, which does have a larger screen.

You're also wrong that they have not upgraded the camera. The 9000 had a 2.0MP camera. This one is 5, which is the same as the iPhone 4. But it's not even megapixels that determine the quality of the camera; it's the image sensor. The Torch had a very good camera whose low light pictures compared favorably with iPhone 4 and newer Android models, and I expect the new Bold's ...

You are mistaken. The iPhone 4 has a much better resolution (960x640) than the new Bold. Read the specs, or just look at both screens and its easy to see.

Furthermore, this new Bold being released has the same exact inferior camera as the Torch and that was released over 1 year ago.

I have the Torch and the camera and screen are totally inferior.

Why would RIMM choose not to increase the resolution to make it equal with iPhone? Why would they choose not to increase the size of the screen? Why would they give us the same inferior camera as the phone they released over 1 year ago? They are either lazy or stupid.

You're not understanding. 940x640 is the number of pixels, but they are spread across a 3.5" screen. If you've got a smaller screen, you can achieve similar clarity with a lower number of pixels.

iPhone 4 pixel density = 326 pixels per inch
Bold 9900 = 287 pixels per inch
Motorla Atrix = 275 pixels per inch
HTC Inspire = 240 pixels per inch
HTC Evo = 217 pixels per inch

That makes the Bold 9900 the second-clearest screen on that list of smartphones. So, again: the screen has seen a huge upgrade, and is right up there among the elite in terms of resolution.

To hell with the screen. LIKE YOU SAID EARLIER, ITS THE FORM FACTOR!!!

Give us something new RIM. I really want an alternative to android and I'm with Sprint so I don't have the iPhone option that I would love. Plus I'm one of those guys that like to go against the grain so I vowed to not get an android no matter how attractive it looks. So I've been waiting and waiting on someone to come along and sweep me off my feet as a potential new customer. HP? Meh I want a side slide out keyboard. WP7? I want the HTC arrive, just wish it had a front facing camera. BB? Same old ugly a$$ form with that small screen. So it looks like I will get the WP7

The small screen is literally the only thing about this phone that's not in line with other top-tier smartphones. And if they gave it a bigger screen, either:

- The phone would have to be huge and unwieldy, or
- It would have to be a slider, making it the next Torch and not a Bold, or
- It would have to have no QWERTY, which would make it a Storm, and therefore it would suck.

The Bold 9000 was the best phone I've ever typed on, by a mile. I don't want them to make it two inches longer just to give it a bigger screen. They improved the form factor where it counts: thinness and material quality (metal, Gorilla glass).

I want to see BB make a phone like the HTC arrive. A side slider with a full screen thats would be thin. Now that would be a sexy phone from BB that I would buy even if it didn't have a front facing camera. I don't/wont care that its not a Bold. I don't care what you call it, just make the damn thing. Storm wouldn't have been so bad if it had the new OS with up 2 par hardware specs.

There are dozens of phones out there like the one you described. Not every smartphone on the market needs to fit into the full-touch-or-side-slider cookie cutter. If they made a BB like the one you want, it would be even worse for them; their phones would in no way distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack. At least the phones they're making cater to a fiercely loyal following.

And, for the record, the Storm was a POS. I'd take the Bold any day over that horror show.
