Well, yes, the pad needs to plug into the wall. Until houses come with wireless power walls (which has questionable safety) something will always need to plug into an outlet.

This add some convenience as you can simply lay it down and pick it up at any time, without fiddling with a cable. If you lay your phone down on your desk at work, but pick it up often, are you as likely to plug it in to charge? I'm not. But if setting it down = charging, I'd be much more likely to charge during the day. Right now I only charge when I go to bed, so I'm not plugging/unplugging all day. This might change that.

The idea of this built into desks is neat, but I don't see it happening, except in cafés, etc.

Cars, however... I think it would be extremely cool - and feasible - for Qi chargers to be built into car consoles. Then you just drop your phone down as you drive and it charges as you commute. That'd be pretty neat.
