How exactly...

Will this merger create jobs? Every other time we have seen a merger there is always a loss of jobs through the closing of retail stores that overlap in areas and through the shutting down of call centers. This one doesn't seem to add up for me.

Agreed.

My guess is ATT's spin out of this is it will create jobs as opposed to ONLY ATT's workforce. Otherwise, there will definitely be a loss.

The only other thing I can think of is that they will try to spin it as creating jobs for the 4G network build out. Thats only a short term job creation though since those network technicians will get axed as soon as the job is complete. Not exactly the long term job creation that the country is looking for. Plus I still don't think it will create enough jobs to offset the stores and call centers that are surely going to be closing.

Dude, building 4G won't be a short term job at all. I know guys who are still updating towers to 3G. LTE... LONG TERM EVOLUTION ... this is a fairly long job.

However, I can't begin to think of how this will create jobs ... that is counter intuitive to everything we've seen in the past mergers (suncom and t-mo, alltell and verizon)... to sum it all up ... AT&T probably means they will create more jobs after they destroy a huge number of them.

I think the same way that it will "increase competition". It won't. Talked with a current TMO call center employee here in ABQ who said they would be getting bonuses to stay on with the new combined company. Personally, I think this is a "window-dressing" tactic AT&T has engineered to get gov approval and once approved, adios to a majority of TMO employees! Same goes for the LTE to "95% of the country". BS (that's barbara streissand of course).

Well, the arguement can be made that VZW has already put into place a plan to get LTE to 97% of America and therefore in order to increase competition, AT&T needs to purchase TMO so they can give consumers a choice of LTE carriers...

Nope. AT&T has announced plans that, even if the merger is approved, will overlay LTE only within the extent of its current GSM/W-CDMA network -- in other words, only where AT&T already has its own licensed spectrum & established network. So, the spectrum argument is basically void. AT&T does NOT require T-Mobile's spectrum to NOT expand its own network.

I have already posted this in a previous thread. Compare the maps:

It doesn't matter. AT&T will continue to spew those lies all over the media while greasing the palms of the politicians under the table.

That's about as ethical as renaming a 3G network 4G....

I have theorized that ATT may argue to the FCC that the creation of jobs will be done by adding additional stores and staff in rural areas to accommodate the extra subscribers acquired.

Why I think this will not work:

1) ATT will not be extending their network beyond what they already have. This means no extra stores will be needed in other market areas. Essentially, they will lie.

2) If staff is increased, it would be by 2 to 5 more associates per stores already in existence depending on area. This will be done internally with the access t-mobile employees they decide to keep on. No new jobs. Just a shift from one carrier to the next. The others will get let go.

With roughly 70,000 employees, I can speculate maybe 1200 to 1500 ...

Actually, what will probably happen is some of the non-corporate AT&T stores will be replaced with Corp. locations in rural areas. Most of the stores there are companies that are paid to represent AT&T and if they are replaced, will probably just be re-assigned to whatever their parent company feels sells well that they have a contract with.

You have to realize is that "They will not fire us", however it will not be up to them if ATT decides to close down the call center.

Let's face it, the only folks at T-Mobile that are going to keep their jobs are the ones that have kissed the right ass over the years. The rest will be collecting unemployment.
