Mike; I do not have a Moto "Q", but I do have their previous Smart Phone, the MP220. I struggled with this also until I dug through the folders to find where they kept the "canned" ringtones that come with the phone. See if you can place the MP3 ring tones that you want use in the following folder:
Storage\Application Data\Sounds.
If you put you file in there, you should be able to find it when you go to the set ring tone menus. Also, with my MP220, sometimes certain MP3's would still not show up in the menu and I would have to convert them to a WAV (which are much bigger, but hopefully for a ring tone, you only need a few seconds of the song). Hope this helps and I did not waste your time baseing all this on the MP220 and Windows Smart Phone 2003 2nd Edition (the Q uses 2005).
