Well guess what, Alltel's old customers get to keep their rate plans on ATT. Did you see the recent headline about the markets ATT took over?

Just because Alltel's customers get to keep their rate plans for now does not mean the they will allow T-Mobile users to keep their plans too. Many of T-Mobile devices will not work on AT&T's 3G/4G networks. I don't see AT&T giving all those T-Mobile users brand new Smartphones and letting them keep their cheaper T-Mobile plans.

The difference is AT&T gained a few Alltel customers in Montana, North Dakota and so on. How many actual subs is that? I'm betting that it is NOT forty million or so like T-Mobile. So what is AT&T likely to do? Let the T-Mobile customers keep their devices and plans for now? Absolutely. But once the merger is complete and those customers' contracts expire or they want to upgrade then they are certainly going to force them into 3G or pseudo 4G devices which use the 1900MHz band rather than AWS. That's a given. They MAY even force them to select AT&T plans or hit the door. Besides Sprint where else are they going to go and even if they DO go to Verizon or Sprint they will STILL have to purchase new phones AND pay new activation fees.

Fact of the matter is this, based on what I have witnessed in this industry for over 10 years, the customers will be able to keep their current rate plans. And guess what, the smart comsumer would come to T-Mobile now and get locked into an affordable rate plan. If the AT&T deal does go through, they can always buy a full priced handset from AT&T without switching their rate plan, and the beauty of it is the fact that there are many non-AWS unlocked phones you can buy also. I'm sticking with T-Mobile and keeping my rate plan for as long as I can!

ATT will more than likely allow current Mobile customers to keep their current plans, even when they have to switch phones. Granted, yes they may or may not have to pay anything for a replacement phone. I'm thinking that they will not. But, if they do, it will probably be at a special discounted rates for those customers.

As for the plans, I currently have an unlimited data plan that I've carried over for a few years. The best thing for people to do is make sure you talk to customer service before contract re-up. I had to choose one of the current plans when I upgraded my phone but, had customer service switch my plan back to the unlimited plan. What I was told by a customer rep was,if you already have the unlimited plan, call sooner tha...

as far as I know, customers are allowed to keep any old plan from previous carriers untill they want to add another line or upgrade devices or make a change.
