"Today's action represents a new level of unwarranted government intervention. By forcing carriers that have invested in wireless infrastructure to make those networks available to competitors that avoid this investment, at a price ultimately determined by the FCC"

Even if one accepts that the FCC has the authority to force carriers to allow data roaming, the most damning part of this is the price being ultimately determined by the FCC.

So I'm thinking about this and how there is something that is just rubbing me the wrong way about this. Try this: It's like having two kids and you tell the older kid, "You share with your little sister. If she tells me that you were not fair in your division of that candy bar I will get on you.

I'm certain the prices they're making them use would be equivalent to what VZW charges Sprint. Same price as a large-ish competitor.

If AT&T is allowed to buy T-Mobile, this is going to be absolutely necessary to pass for smaller carriers to even have a fighting chance. If the duopoly scares you, this should give you a bit of peace knowing that they will make it possible for smaller carriers to get involved.

Another thing to consider is they're mandating roaming data, they aren't specifying any specific type, maybe just 1xrtt or EDGE.

I'm sure you are correct. However, a roaming agreement between Verizon and Sprint is quite different than one between Verizon and Cellular South. It simply is. CSouth has nothing Verizon needs so it is quite one-sided. Furthermore, the relationship is quite antagonistic so CSouth is certain to be the bratty little sister who will run to the FCC crying if Verizon doesn't give it exactly what it wants. Frankly, Verizon would not have one with Sprint if it did not have to honor the agreements Alltel signed with Sprint. CellStudent states that the FCC is looking to the future when voice will use LTE. Perhaps he is correct. I hope he is. Otherwise, the FCC is just abusing its power because it can.
