I will address NFC, specifically, though.
We thought about the NFC issue, the problem is that Nokia and T-Mobile haven't announced or promised any specific NFC services or functionality for this phone.
Google is actively encouraging devs to write NFC apps and rolling out services of its own for Android phones with NFC.
T-Mobile has talked about deploying NFC in the US, but hasn't promised that the Astound will support them. In fact, when I asked T-Mobile about it at CTIA, they said specifically that "new phones will be out ...

I appreciate that my usage of phones is probably very different than the reviewer and perhaps I have a bias in my own view of what is useful and what is esoteric.
