This WILL result in less consumer choice, higher prices, lower quality of service, and higher prices. Rural America will be hit the hardest - as if you note in any propaganda that AT&T put's out they are only referencing the top 20 markets.

This will also put the fate of Android in some shady hands. T-Mobile has been a balancing force and has proved to be a very viable competitor. Everyone needs to come together and try and stop this. Stay in the loop at http://www.facebook.com/saveourdroid

I don't see it doing anything short of driving competitors to become more innovative.

I see prices dropping, customer service improving across the board and more customer choice as competition grows STRONGER through innovations like lightsquared and the growth of companies like Cricket, Sprint and Metro PCS as alternatives to the larger companies.

i agree! prices will drop with this merger!
sprint, cricket, metro pcs will have to lower their prices to compete!
if you a current customers, i'm pretty sure you can keep your current plan!
i'm using cingular (before att takes over) family plan, 39.99$ for 1st line, 9.99 addition lines until this year 2011! the reason i changed plan cus i want some new smartphones. haha

"I don't see it doing anything short of driving competitors to become more innovative."

Really? No. Seriously? You think removing a competitor is going to increase competition? Do you read your posts before posting?

Do you really think the competition (yeah COMPETITION) is just going to throw in the towel?

Do you honestly think cellular providers are just going to stop being competitive, stop introducing new products just because AT&T and Verizon are big?

And what about innovation? Cell phones haven't been around all that long really. Do you think NOTHING else is ever going to make it to market?

On top of it all, do you really think people are going to pay for a service they cannot afford? Prices are already too high as it is and companies have been LOWERING their prices and adding features!!!

No customer will purchase something they do not feel is worth the money. Especially a service that is NOT a necessity!

Unfortunately in this day and age, most consumers see wireless communications as one of the top, if not THE top, necessity. Regardless of the the fact that cellphone service is a priviledge and a non-necessity, most people don't view it that way. Many people don't like paying a lot of money, but they will if they believe it will help them stay in contact with the people they love and so that it will aid in emergencies. If Verizon raised their 450 plan by $10 and forced everyone on the current 450 plan to switch to it, a small percentage of people would quit and go to someone else. Many people like to stick with what they know, even if there's a better deal with another carrier in their particular area.

Sorry. The logic does not follow. Eliminating a competitor does not make the marketplace more competitive.

But that's the thing, no one is eliminated in this, one of the current competitors is getting stronger to fill the void.

The new competition will come from try to beat a larger opponent rather than several smaller opponents. It's the same, if not, better competition than is already available now and I think it will only help everyone out.

I currently work for and own a T-Mobile phone and I'm not worried in the least.

Keep trying. I am sure someone will be convinced by that argument. Maybe Verizon will use that argument when they swallow Sprint.

Oh... okay, I wasn't arguing but whatever.

I want there to be only one carrier, like Taco Bell in Demolition Man.

Screw rural America, tired of them bitching. As far as innovation, you think the US is the only place on earth that uses Android OS?? And even so, there seems to be a big trend from AT&T towards Android.

And please, DT is hardly the saint you seem to make it out to be. There are far better arguments to oppose this merger.

And what TMO said does make sense, If the merger is said and done next April 1st. Its going to be sometime before they do anything with AWS, and new devices will come out.

You're the wrong kind of holy crusader here bud. First off, Android is not in peril in AT&T's hands. They have one major smartphone that isn't Android. They have maybe 3 or 4 smaller known smartphones that are Windows 7, they've phased out windows 6.5 for the most part and Blackberry is still viable for business users. Other than that...every smart phone is Android. The majority of the smartphones are Android and there are like 17? Somewhere around that figure...new Android devices that are set to come out this year.

Where's the peril for Android again?

Slide-out keyboards is one of the last things to worry about with ATT. The top things I think we should all be worrried about are:

1) The way ATT locks down the Android phones (no third party, sideloading of apps), converting them to essentially iPhones.

2) The inability to get an unlimited data plan.

3) ATT and VZ are learning new ways all the time how to limit your bandwidth so you'll need to pay for what is 'normal' now, and nothing close to what's actually possible.

4) You think TMO has a lot of bloat ware??? wait until you see what ATT sticks on your phone without the ability to remove.

All businesses are selfish and evil. That really is immaterial to the discussion. The point is we need as many of the ravenous dogs around as possible to keep one or two from coming out on top and determining that they can call a truce and feed on the rest of us.

i agree that this will result in less competition and higher pricing among the major carriers. is it the end of the world? probably not, but at&t is a few steps closer to another antitrust lawsuit....it will happen again someday just like it happened in the 70s. but at least we still have plenty of prepaid mvno's to choose from, and i guarantee you sprint will step their game up MAJORLY if this happens. they need to. they just integrated google voice into all their phones, and anyone can now change their sprint number into a google voice number. so i think sprint is on the right track, and will still provide a viable less expensive alternative to the bigger carriers
